Little Elephant in Tiong Bahru

There is a Little Elephant in Tiong Bahru –  not the large herbivorous mammal with tusks but a Thai restaurant and bar.  Located in one the Art Deco buildings along Eng Hoon Road, the newly opened Little Elephant Thai Bistro serves affordable Thai food in a rustic and laidback setting. The Thai word for elephant is Chang ( ช้าง) so, of course, Chang Beer is served at the Little Elephant.

Little Elephant in Tiong Bahru is located next to the famous Tiong Bahru Bakery, separated by just a passageway. The newly opened eatery is designed to evoke the atmosphere of a rustic That eating house. There is a bar which is decorated with attractive colourful tiles.

There is an outdoor section with an eclectic collection of wooden furniture including a cozy dining set in the shape of a boat. It looks like a chill-out spot for cocktails, beers, and bar food.

Little Elephant Thai Bistro has an all day menu which includes the familiar Thai favourites – papaya salad, fish cakes, tom yum soup, basil minced pork, fried morning glory with shrimp paste and other Thai rice and noodle dishes and desserts. The full menu can be found on their Facebook Page.

There is a Value Lunch Menu. The set lunch priced at $8.80 (plus service charge) offers a choice of main course. The set includes a side of papaya salad and a bowl of soup.

I had lunch at Little Elephant and opted for the pad Thai. The presentation of the lunch, using a small wooden tray, was attractive.

The papaya salad with a zingy dressing was nice. There was a nice balance of flavours and textures – it was not too sour and not too spicy. The soup was light and quite enjoyable.

The pad Thai came with lots of roasted peanuts, several pieces of prawns and lots of other ingredients. The humble stir-fried rice noodles dish at Little Elephant was not bad but probably not something a Thai street food connoisseur would gush about.

I also ordered the Thai coconut ($5). It looked rather small but contained quite a lot of sweet coconut juice and there was plenty of thick succulent meat inside. It was refreshing and delicious.

Little Elephant Thai Bistro in Tiong Bahru is a nice cozy place and prices are reasonable. The set lunch is attractively priced. We would be happy to eat there again when we want a simple affordable Thai meal.
