Sometimes referred to as the Killiney chocolate cake, the Belgium dark chocolate loaves by Freshly Baked by Le Bijoux are a hot favourite. Freshly Baked by Le Bijoux is a little bakery and cafe that occupies the first shop at the stretch of cafes and shops along Killiney Road (facing Singtel Shop Comcentre).
The front part of the cafe serves as the retail area where the cakes are displayed for sale. The range of cakes available at Freshly Baked by Le Bijoux is not very wide. The cakes seem to be modestly presented. We did not see any pretty or extensively decorated cakes that day. They are unlikely to win any beauty pageants. But I think that is not the point at this bakery cafe. We are more interested in their inner beauty – i.e. how do they taste.
The Belgium dark chocolate cake seems to be the leading favourite at Freshly Baked by Le Bijoux cafe. Some of our friends associate this cafe with this loaf cake, fondly referring to them as the Killiney chocolate cake. We saw batches of this cake being made ready for sale. A slice of this loaf cake costs $2.50. For takeaway, it is more economical to get a whole loaf which costs $10.50.
Some simple food is served in the cafe. Here are pictures of the Freshly Baked by Le Bijoux menu.
We did not have much to eat that day. Just a couple of slices of cake and coffee. Both types of cake were good. They were simple and uncomplicated. My companion thought that they seemed homemade. I am unable to verify that as I am inept at baking. It would be a miracle if I can make one like this at home. The better cake was the Killiney chocolate cake. It was not as moist or richly chocolate-tasting as some of the other famous brands in town, but it was certainly a good tasting chocolate cake, especially for the price of $10.50 for a whole loaf. That is about the price of a slice of cake in a fancy part of town. Coffee and cappuccino cost $3.20 and $4.50 respectively. They were like the cakes and the cafe – uncomplicated and competently made.
