Yellow Pot Restaurant – Like a Modern Bond Girl

Yellow Pot Restaurant at Six Senses Duxton Hotel is a new modern Chinese restaurant where the interiors excite diners as much as the food. At a time when the look and feel of many of the new cafes and restaurants in Singapore are familiar or quite indistinguishable, like James Bond’s tuxedos, Yellow Pot is like a head-turning Bond girl – sassy, mysterious and glamorous. The food at the restaurant should also meet the approval of the urbane 007 agent.

The boutique hotel at Duxton Road, now managed by Bangkok-based operator Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, has been given a coat of black paint. The black, gold and yellow theme of the hotel evokes a sense of style and luxury. At Yellow Pot restaurant, chrysanthemum yellow dominates. The interior design incorporates old-world elements and a combination of European style and Orientalism to create a dramatic stylish space.

Yellow Pot Menu

Yellow Pot says it “offers a menu of authentic and innovative Chinese cuisine”. In line with the Eat With Six Senses programme (which follows the guiding principles of natural ingredients, local and sustainable, and less is more), diners can eat at Yellow Pot without feeling guilty about harming the environment or derailing their health goals.

Yellow Pot serves affordable Chinese food but its menu is not your typical Chinese restaurant menu. Below are photos of sections of Yellow Pot’s menu.

Yellow Pot Appetizers

We started dinner at Yellow Pot with 2 appetizers – Red Snapper Mille-Feuille ($16) and Stuffed Pork Belly ($14).

Yellow Pot Menu

The Red Snapper Mille-Feuille was very good. It was topped with a tangy spicy mango salad. The filo puff pastry had paper thin flaky layers. The appetizer with various textures and flavours was a great introduction to the dinner that followed.

The Stuffed Pork Belly was more like a deep fried ham roll. It was tasty.

Sharing Plates @ Yellow Pot Restaurant

We had a number of sharing plates. Suffice to say that all were good and enjoyable but the Steamed Barramundi and Braised Short Rib deserved special mentions.

Yellow Pot Restaurant Fish

The Steamed Barramundi (S$22) with the scallion-ginger pesto was an interesting variation of the traditional Chinese steamed fish dish. The sliced fish fillets were flaky and tender. The barramundi marinated with Chinese wine combined well with the scallion-ginger pesto. It was a delightful dish. (See Recipe: Steamed Barramundi With Scallion Ginger Pesto).

The 48 Hour Braised Short Rib ($28) with charred green chilli sauce was the standout dish of our dinner. The beef was very tender and flavourful with earthy tones. The green chilli sauce was subtle – adding flavours without overpowering. It was delicious comfort food – good for the body and good for the soul.

Yellow Pot Desserts

We had Mango Sago ($8) Bee Pollen Sorbet ($5) and Chilli Chocolate  Sorbet ($5), for desserts. The Mango Sago, which was in the signature vibrant yellow colour of the restaurant, was a very thick mango puree. The mango taste dominated the luscious dessert. We thought the sorbets were the better choice. The unusual but interesting flavours of Bee Pollen and Chilli Chocolate were a treat for the palate. The Chilli Chocolate Sorbet would taste like normal chocolate ice cream initially but the chilli would assert itself by leaving a unique pleasant tingling sensation on the tongue. The sorbets may not be very Chinese but there were very enjoyable.

Good Stylish Chinese Restaurant

Yellow Pot Restaurant at Six Senses Duxton Hotel is a stylish modern Chinese Restaurant that will allow you to enjoy a good meal in an atmospheric space. Chef Sebastian Goh (who previously helmed Szechuan Court in Fairmont Singapore) presents dishes that are interesting, healthy and delicious. Like a modern Bond girl, Yellow Pot Restaurant is multifaceted, slightly mysterious and sophisticated. Of course, it looks beautiful too. Afterall, the restaurant was designed by the gifted hand of Anouska Hempel – a Bond girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) before she became a hotelier and acclaimed designer.
