We were back again at Singapore’s most colourful Chinese restaurant – this time to try the Mitzo set lunch. Even though we have been there before, the Mitzo restaurant in Grand Park Orchard (the hotel opposite Orchard Paragon) never fails to amaze us. We spent a disproportionate amount of time staring at the live jellyfish swimming in the aquarium at the bar. I suppose part of the reason for the disco decor is that a new persona emerges at night. According to the Mitzo website, “When night falls, like a true chameleon, Mitzo takes on the persona of a modern supper club, blurring the lines between restaurant, cocktail bar and club”.
Mitzo set lunch menu
At lunch time, there are a few Mitzo set lunch options available. A 3-course $28 lunch, a 4-course $38 set and a $58 executive set lunch. Here are pictures of the Mitzo set lunch menus. We took the Goldilock approach and settled for the middle one. For the extra $10, the 4-course lunch gets an extra noodle or porridge dish and the soup contains an abalone.
We crunched on these nuts and crispy tidbits while waiting for the real food to arrive.
The soup was a very pleasant clear soup. Although the soup looks so plain and transparent, it was tasty. The abalone lended a touch of luxury.
Next to arrive were the dim sum items. Each person gets to select 3 types of dim sum which came in two pieces. There being two of us, we chose a total of 6 types of dim sum.
The charcoal barbecued pork bun looks nothing like the regular char siew bao, but the taste was very much the same. We were unable to detect any taste resulting from the black colour.
The royal shrimp dumpling with black caviar looked exquisite with that bunch of caviar which added an extra taste to the familiar ha kao.
The steamed shrimp and scallop dumpling also looked beautiful.
The other dim sum items we had included the steamed shrimp and pork dumpling (siew mai), deep fried shrimp and crabmeat dumpling – both were very good in taste but plain in looks.
To take a break from the dim sum, we ordered a portion of crispy roast pork ($18) for sharing. This was also delicious. The skin was the highlight – crisp and not so oily. But it was a small portion, which makes this an expensive side order.
For the ‘main course’, there were two choices – dry noodles with dumplings and Mitzo barbecued pork and porridge with lobster claw, fish and pork. We tried one of each.
The porridge was nice and smooth with a light seafood flavour. The crab claw was fresh and well cooked. The noodle was not as exquisite but it was a hearty serving of dry wanton noodles. Those with big appetites may prefer the noodle.
The dessert was a glass of jelly. It was a light, enjoyable dessert. The best part was eating the small globules which contain liquid and burst when chewed. Overall, the $48 Mitzo set lunch was certainly quite pricey for a dim sum set lunch in Singapore, but it would be a good choice if the objective is to have an experience that is different from the typical Chinese restaurant in Singapore. Another interesting fact about Mitzo is that they are open late – until 1 am for supper (with a limited menu). Where else can you have dim sum at midnight in Singapore?
