Crystal Jade Palace Restaurant at Ngee Ann City is the restaurant that launched the successful Crystal Jade chain with over 100 outlets across more than 20 major cities. We had not been there for quite a long time. One of the reasons is that this Chinese restaurant on Level 4 of Takashimaya Shopping Center is almost always crowded and we will have to wait to get in.
Crystal Jade Palace Ngee Ann City
We were in Ngee Ann City recently and wanted to have a late lunch. We managed to get a table at Crystal Jade Palace without prior reservation as it was nearing the end of the lunch hours. It was a good thing that on weekdays their lunchtime stretched to 3 pm.
Crystal Jade Palace Ngee Ann City has the familiar feel of a popular Chinese restaurant. The decor is elegant but there is a family restaurant atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive.
Like many Chinese restaurants, Crystal Jade will serve tidbits and offer tea as soon as you are seated. The usual Chinese restaurant overheads – Tidbits ($4), Towel ($0.40 each) and Chinese Tea ($3 per person) – would be added to the bill.
Crystal Jade Dim Sum
We ordered a few items of dim sum – Bean Curd Roll with Shrimp & Pork ($5.50), Carrot Cake ($5.50), BBQ Pork Pastry ($6.50) and Mango Prawn Roll ($6.50).
Each of the dim sum items was made with their usual high Crystal Jade standards. The plating may not be attractive but the dim sum was of good quality and tasty. The BBQ Pork Pastry or Char Siew Sou deserved special mention. The sweet and savoury char siew filling was moist and flavourful. The crust was buttery and flaky. Every bite was a delight.
Crystal Jade Palace A la Carte
We also ordered a few items from the a la carte menu – Double-boiled Yellow Melon Soup with Seafood ($18), Claypot Eggplant with Minced Meat ($20) and Sweet & Sour Pork ($22). The plating for the a la carte items was quite an improvement compared to the dim sum items.
The Sweet & Sour Pork was very good. Coated with a nice tangy sauce, each piece of meat was crispy on the outside but moist and tender on the inside.
The double-boiled soup brewed in a hollowed-out melon came with diced seafood and mushrooms. It was a delicious broth with natural sweetness and complex flavours.
The Claypot Eggplant with Minced Meat is quite a common dish but the Crystal Jade Palace’s version is one of our favourites. The eggplant had a nice firm texture and was coasted by a delicious well-balanced sauce.
Overall, the meal at Crystal Jade Palace Ngee Ann City was a good and satisfying one. The prices are not cheap but we got good food with the consistent Crystal Jade quality in a nice place with attentive service.
