The famous South Beach Diet focuses on good carbohydrates, healthy fats and plenty of lean protein as a way to lose weight and improve health. We don’t have the willpower to follow a strict diet plan even though we could do with some weight loss. The closest thing to the South Beach Diet for us is to head to Real Food at South Beach. In this restaurant run by people who believe in serving good, ethical and healthy food, we can get a variety of meat-free dishes prepared with ingredients devoid of preservatives and other questionable additives.
Real Food at South Beach is a cafe set up by the people of the organic grocery shop Real Food Grocer. The vegetarian cafe serves food with “No processed ingredients, No Artificial Preservatives and No Trans-fat”.
Located on the basement level of South Beach, the cafe looks sleek and trendy. There are small wooden dining tables, communal tables as well as a row of stylish grey sofas with low marble top tables.
Real Food Menu
The menu of Real Food at South Beach is quite extensive. Besides healthy salad and juices, the cafe offers all day breakfast items, burgers, pasta as well as rice and noodle dishes. It also has a separate menu for pizza. Below are photos of a few pages of the main menu and the pizza menu.
Healthy Eating at Real Food
We selected the Fried Vegetarian Dumplings ($10.80) and the Veggie Omelette ($9.80 plus $3.00 for baked beans) from the menu and also ordered a Margherita Pizza ($14.80).
The Fried Vegetarian Dumplings looked rather plain and uninteresting but they turned out to be quite good. The skin was crispy and the filling of mixed vegetables was crunchy and packed with flavours.
We were not expecting much when we ordered the Veggie Omelette. When the dish arrived we were pleasantly surprised. It looked colourful and interesting. The omelette was served with a helping of greens, drizzled with a delicious salad sauce, and two pieces of cheese toast. The omelette was prepared with assorted vegetables, mushroom and pineapple. The dish was easily the best dish of our meal.
The Margherita Pizza was nicely presented but we thought the taste was quite ordinary.
Real Food at South Beach is certainly a nice and cosy cafe for those who want to eat ethical and healthy food or like a meat free meal. Even for people like us who are not too discerning about what we eat, there is a good variety of Western and Asian dishes that look and taste good – enjoyable real food.
