Kin Japanese BBQ is a small yakitori bar in Hobart, Tasmania that opens at night. It only seats 13 people. It reminded us of the Japanese TV series, the Midnight Diner. Except that in this case, this late night Japanese diner is run by a couple of Australians. This was our second dinner of that evening, after an earlier outing to restaurant Franklin which we wrote about in an earlier post.
Here is a picture of the kitchen at Kin Yakitori Bar. The dining area is even smaller. We do not have any picture of it as we could not take a picture of it without pointing the camera up someone else’s nose. The cosy atmosphere did bring about a convivial atmosphere as there was spontaneous banter among the hosts and the customers. The menu at this Hobart yakitori bar is understandably short. Kin Japanese BBQ Menu
The main drinks served here are Japanese sake and beer. We sat along a narrow counter facing the wall. Behind us were a few small tables.
We had an assortment of skewers. The chicken thigh (above picture, $9) was a substantial item. Two of these can be a small dinner for me.
The wallaby tender eye fillet ($9) tasted like grilled beef. This was our first wallaby dish during our entire Tasmania trip.
The Tasmania octopus tentacles ($12) was the best dish of the day. They were reasonably sized and cooked just right.
Dipping grilled scallops into a raw egg yolk was the first time I was eating yakitori in this way.
This is a complete picture of our late night stopover at Kin Japanese BBQ. Some of the dishes had more of the Japanese yakitori taste than others, such as the chicken with the sweet soy sauce seasoning. This new yakitori bar in Hobart is a nice addition to the dining scene as it was a refreshing place for us to visit after trying some of the serious restaurants there.
