On the fringe of Orchard Road, Killiney Road is a narrow road which is colourful and busy. To a large extent, it is busy because of Singaporeans’ twin obsessions – mobile phones and food. The car park entrance to Singtel Shop Comcentre is at Killiney Road and many interesting restaurants and cafes are located in the shophouses along the road. The famous Killiney Kopitiam is at shophouse No. 67. Right next to it is Warung M Nasir, one of the best places in the city to enjoy a tantalising collection of authentic Padang-style dishes.
Warung M Nasir Restaurant
Warung M Nasir restaurant is opened by Mohamad Nasir Mohamad, or M. Nasir, a Singaporean-Malaysian poet, singer-songwriter, actor and film director. The cosy restaurant has brightly coloured walls and simple furnishing. The main feature of the restaurant is the long display cabinet which showcases a wide variety of dishes.
Typical Nasi Padang dishes like Sambal Goreng, Sambal Squid, Tahu Telur, various beef, poultry and fish dishes and a diverse range of Gulai (curry) are available. There are also traditional kuehs.
Nasi Padang Lunch
We had lunch at Warung M Nasir restaurant recently. The system was that you would just go up to the display counter and point out the dishes you wanted. We ordered Assam Pedas Fish, Beef Rendang, Begedil, Sayur Loleh and Fried Anchovies & Peanuts. We also had 2 plates of white steamed rice and a cup of Coffee and a cup of Teh Tarik. The bill came up to the grand total of $26.
One of the highlights of our Nasi Padang lunch would usually be the Beef Rendang. Warung M Nasir’s version did not disappoint. It had a thick spicy sauce and had robust flavours. The beef was fork-tender.
The Sayur Loleh looked good and was of the expected standard but the curry was a tad too sweet for our liking,
The Assam Pedas Fish of Warung M Nasir restaurant was very good though the tangy curry was fiery spicy. That was our favourite dish of the day.
Both the Begedil (fried potato patties) and the Fried Anchovies & Peanuts were very well done. Simple dishes that were really enjoyable.
Good Affordable Nasi Padang
We had a lunch of beef, fish and vegetable dishes with 2 side dishes for only $26 with coffee and tea included. The food was tasty and enjoyable. The only regret was that we did not have room for desserts. We think Warung M Nasir is one of the best restaurants in the Orchard Road-Somerset area to enjoy an affordable Nasi Padang meal.
