The full name of the restaurant in Bedok Point is “香香百年台湾味 – Xiang Xiang Traditional Taiwanese Cuisine since 1916“; and its Facebook Page says that Xiang Xiang is “a 102 years old traditional Taiwanese eatery”. The casual diner in the small Bedok mall is in fact a fairly new one but, apparently, its food is cooked following recipes that have been passed down from more than a century ago.
Xiang Xiang Traditional Taiwanese Cuisine
Xiang Xiang Traditional Taiwanese Cuisine is on the ground level of Bedok Point. The decor is basic but with distinctive Chinese elements. It is set up like a self-service fast food outlet. You order and pay at the counter.
Menu
Xiang Xiang offers Taiwanese food made with natural ingredients, which we are told are mainly imported directly from Taiwan. The Menu is fairly straightforward. There are a few rice and noodles dishes and a few side dishes.
Mee Sua & Braised Pork Rice
We ordered the Crispy Chicken Strip Mee Sua ($6.80) and Braised Minced Pork Rice ($7.90). With each order, we could top up $2 for either a soup or a drink. We asked for the Passion Fruit Juice. We also ordered a side dish – Taiwanese Seafood Cake ($3.50).
The food was prepared to order. So the wait for the food was quite long. The presentation was unremarkable.
The mee sua was tasty. The noodles were not mushy and the broth was not too starchy or oily. With a bit of the homemade chilli added, there was a good kick. The chilli was very spicy.
The classic lu rou fan or braised minced pork rice was like a home-cooked meal. The braised pork was lightly seasoned. On the whole the rice dish was good enough but did not excite. The same could be said of the Taiwanese seafood cake.
There is nothing fancy or exciting about the dishes at Xiang Xiang Traditional Taiwanese Cuisine. After all, the food is supposed to like the traditionally-prepared food of long ago. Xiang Xiang in Bedok is a good option for a simple and affordable Taiwanese meal. What you get is comfort food which is quite tasty – just like food an old Taiwanese granny may cook for you.
