阿和麺薄 Ah Hoe Mee Pok is another noodle stall in the stretch of Tanjong Katong Road with a number of popular eating places. The famous Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee (and the competing Eng’s Wantan Noodles) as well as Ponggol Nasi Lemak, Nan Xiang Chicken Rice and Heng Long Teochew Porridge are concentrated in that area. 阿和麺薄 Ah Hoe Mee Pok from West Coast has decided to set up their outpost in the East right in the middle of the Tanjong Katong hub for cheap and good food.
Ah Hoe Mee Pok occupies a corner shophouse. It is air-conditioned but there are a few tables out in the naturally ventilated side alley.
The decor and furniture are functional though you can sense the attempt to have a contemporary look with the black and white theme.
You place your order by filling in an order chit, indicating your table number, and bringing it to the cashier. You pay and wait to collect your drinks from the counter. Then you return to your table to wait for the food to be served to you. The wait can be quite long. It might be teething problem at a new outlet but waiting time at Ah Hoe Mee Pok in Tanjong Katong can be more than 20 minutes, even if you order just a standard bowl of noodles. Be prepared to wait even longer if you are there during peak meal times.
Menu of Ah Hoe Mee Pok Tanjong Katong
Pictures of the order chit and menu of Ah Hoe Mee Pok Tanjong Katong are below. As you can see, it basically offers noodles and soup and a few side dishes including signature items of braised abalone and braised fish maw.
Signature Noodle & Fish Dumpling Soup
We went to a mee pok stall but did not order mee pok. We had the “signature Mee Pok” but opted for the kway teow soup version ($6). We also ordered the Handmade Fish Dumpling Soup ($6) to go with plain steamed rice ($1). Kopi C was $2.
The Handmade Fish Dumpling Soup was served in a traditional Chinese cylindrical bowl. Besides the traditional Teochew fish dumplings (or her giao) there were vegetables, fried sole fish (tee poh) and other ingredients in the soup. The skin of the dumpling was good with the right thickness and the right balance of tenderness and chewiness. The soup was a rich and flavourful seafood soup.
The kway teow soup variation of the “signature Mee Pok” had a different kind of broth. It was more delicate and had a sweet and savoury combination. The ingredients included a large prawn, a slice of abalone and lean pork slices. On the whole, it was tasty and enjoyable.
The Kopi C was a machine made version and rather unremarkable.
Good Food but Long Wait
We took a peek at the kitchen and saw that a lot of work went into preparing a simple bowl of noodles. Perhaps, that is why the waiting time at Ah Hoe Mee Pok could be quite long. However, with so many competitors in the vicinity, we hope Ah Hoe Mee Pok could up their game in the operations department. Otherwise, notwithstanding their tasty and enjoyable noodles, only the die-hard fans and those with lots of time to spare will be dining at Ah Hoe Mee Pok Tanjong Katong.
