Located in MOX, a co-working space for creative entrepreneurs, Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee has a laid-back atmosphere. The decor is basic and the wooden furniture is not the most comfortable. However, the shelves of vinyl records and aroma of freshly brewed coffee will make you want to linger.

Blast from the Past

Among the records for sale in the shop were R&B and Soul LP discs as well as records from the 80s and 90s. The Telefunken sign in the cafe was certainly a blast from the past. I had a Telefunken TV once but had not heard of the German radio and TV brand for years.

If you feel up to it, you can play DJ for a while and spin some discs at Choice Cuts. From time to time, the cafe bar hosts events and has sessions featuring professional DJs.

Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee Menu

Choice Cut’s menu is fairly straightforward and limited. There are all day breakfast items as well as coffee, tea, craft beer and wine. It also serves cakes from Mother Dough. Below are pictures of the menu board and some items in the display cabinet.

Brunch Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee

On weekends, Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee opens from 9 am. I dropped in recently for brunch and ordered the Smashed Avo Vegemite Cream Cheese Toast ($8), Pecan Coffee Cake ($6.50) and a Long Black ($4).

I placed my orders at the counter and helped myself to ice water. The coffee and food would be served to where I was seated.

The coffee was served in a paper cup but it was good coffee. It had a medium body with fruity notes and was clean tasting.

Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee Avo Toast

The Smashed Avo Vegemite Cream Cheese Toast was served on a white disposable plate and did not look too exciting. It was, however, a very tasty avocado toast. The thick slice of rustic bread was perfectly toasted so that it had a crispy crust and soft inside. The combination of mashed avocado, Vegemite and cream cheese was delectable. A squeeze of lime added tartness making the toast even more enjoyable.

Cake by Mother Dough

Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee Cake by Mother Dough

Mother Dough is a local bakery founded by Naadhira Ismail, who learnt her craft in the International Culinary Institute in New York and honed it at various bakeries and restaurants in the Big Apple. Her pecan and coffee cake was fairly dense and topped with a sweet, but not to sweet, glaze. The cake was moist and taste of coffee was discernible.

Simple Food Good Coffee & Great Music

Vinyl record and artisanal coffee – the black disc that spins at a leisurely 33 rpm and the black liquid that is slowly and meticulously handcrafted by a barista – both hark back to a time when life was less hectic and more mindful. Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee can bring us back to that era for a brief moment. It can be a laid back haven where we can forget about our tablets and mobile phones and just kick back and enjoy simple food and good coffee with great music.
