TungLok XiHe Peking Duck Orchard Central is one of two Tunglok Peking duck restaurants in Singapore. The other one is in the Grandstand in Bukit Timah. A collaboration between the Singapore Tunglok restaurant group and the Beijing XiHe Group. The signature dish at the restaurant is of course the Peking duck. There are many Chinese restaurants in Singapore serving Peking Duck these days. But we discovered that there were a some differences between the duck served here and those commonly found elsewhere.
The dining area at Tunglok XiHe Peking Duck Orchard Central is partitioned into different zones. We like the areas along the window the best.
TungLok XiHe Peking Duck Orchard Central Menu
Here are pictures of some pages of the TungLok XiHe Peking Duck Orchard Central. For this visit, we focused primarily on the Peking Duck. We had tried the non-duck dishes during a previous visit. You can view our post which has more pages from the menu and other types of food to try at Tunglok Orchard Central. At lunch time, dim sum is also served but the range seems quite limited.
The Peking Duck
The Peking duck ($66) was presented to us and it looked beautiful. The duck looked fat and well proportioned. Its skin was tight and had a golden-brown glow. The chef proceeded to slice up the duck.
We noticed that there were two main differences between the duck served at Tunglok and elsewhere – the duck and the presentation. The duck was apparently sourced from Ireland’s Silver Hill Farm. Tunglok’s website describes it as the “wagyu of ducks” and the “best duck in the world”. We found the duck to be fat and juicy. Some parts of the duck were served with the meat and some as the skin alone, to be eaten with the pancake. This Irish duck had a layer of fat with the skin, making quite oily. We decided that we preferred the regular type of duck for Peking duck.
The other difference is the manner of presentation. There were more types of sauces and condiments than the regular Chinese restaurant. The presentation was done very beautifully. This is definitely more interesting than at many other places. We experimented with the other sauces and concluded that we still preferred the usual combination of cucumber, leek and sweet sauce. Another difference in presentation was that the cheeks of the duck were also served. It was weird to have the eyes staring back at us from the plate. We avoided eye contact and did not touch this part of the bird.
The rest of the meat could be served as a second preparation for an additional price of $12. We opted for the lettuce wrap. The remaining duck was chopped up and fried. Eaten with the fresh lettuce, it was light and refreshing.
We also tried two non-duck dishes. The braised spinach beancurd with monkey head mushroom (above pictures, $16) was a tasty beancurd dish. Would have been better with steamed rice (which we had no room for).
The pan-fried buns stuffed with minced pork and onion ($12 for 8 pieces) were very good. The pastry was soft and chewy and the meat filling had a well-balanced taste.
