Ootoya is a popular Japanese restaurant chain with locations throughout Japan serving authentic teishoku-style meals (set meals which usually comprise a main dish, rice and miso soup). There are several branches in Singapore. Ootoya Orchard is located on the 8th floor of Orchard Central and offers a good range of affordably priced set meals.
The interior of Ootoya is simple and a bit tired looking now. There is a counter at the main entrance area with tatami communal seating on the inner side of the counter. Normal tables are in the narrow wing of the restaurant.
Menu of Ootoya Japanese Restaurant
The main menu offers a wide variety of temptations including steaks, grilled fish and soba lunches. There are supplemental menus and seasonal specials. Below are pictures of sections of the Ootoya’s menus. Special menus and the main menu are on Ootoya’s website (link below).
Healthy Lunch Sets
We ordered 2 sets from the Healthy Lunch Set Menu – the Ootoya Healthy Soup Set ($14) and the Tara Kuruzu Set ($13). Green tea was very reasonably priced at $1 per person.
Both sets came with chawanmushi, which was served along with tea soon after our orders were taken. The tea cup steamed egg was smooth and of good consistency.
The Ootoya Healthy Soup Set came with chicken karage, potato salad, pickles and rice. The main dish was a large bowl of tofu and vegetable soup. It was a substantial meal. There was nothing outstanding in terms of taste but each item of the set meal was nice.
The main dish of the Tara Kuruzu Set was Fried Cod Fish with Vegetables in Black Vinegar sauce. Besides the chawanmushi, other items served with the set were pickles, boiled spinach with bonito flakes, miso soup and rice. The crispy cod fish and vegetables dish was delicious. The sauce was rich and well balanced in flavours. The miso soup was also very good.
Both sets came with a dessert. It was Japanese custard pudding with torched caramel on top. It was very good. The serving was small. We wished they had given us smaller portions of everything else and a larger portion of the custard pudding.
On previous visits, we had tried their charcoal grilled mackerel and breaded pork loin simmered in egg (Katsu Toji) and they were also sumptuous and delightful.
We found the food of Ootoya Japanese Restaurant to be of good quality, well-prepared and enjoyable – and even more gratifying because of the generous portions and reasonable prices.
