Lim Chee Guan Prized Bak Kwa for CNY

4 February 2019: In case you are wondering why there is no queue at Lim Chee Guan outlets, it is because they are closed for CNY and will re-open on 10 February 2019.

You know Chinese New Year is near when you see long queues at Lim Chee Guan bak kwa outlets. The familiar long lines of people waiting patiently to buy the prized festive commodity have returned. How precious is the BBQ savoury sweetmeat? Well, the Lim Chee Guan price for its Signature Sliced Pork Bak Kwa is now $58.00 per kg; and you can expect the price to increase as CNY gets closer.

Queues at Lim Chee Guan

We visited Chinatown on a weekday morning and saw long lines at both the New Bridge Road stall and the People’s Park Complex outlet of Lim Chee Guan.

At the People’s Park outlet, where people had to queue under hot and humid conditions, the staff were handing out publicity materials which could be used as fans.

Do not be fooled by the very short queue or none at all in front of Lim Chee Guan Ion Orchard. The queue starts at the area in front of Muji. You queue to place your order first before going to the shop to collect your treasure.

If you are intent on going to queue for the precious bak kwa, watch out for announcements that certain items, especially the signature sliced pork bak kwa, might have been sold out.

Lim Chee Guan Bak Kwa

We managed to get hold of a packet of Lim Chee Guan Bak Kwa. They came in a very nice packaging. The Bak Kwa Pack in auspicious red would make a very presentable gift.

It is hard for us to understand why Singaporeans will stand in lines for hours just to buy food but it is easy to understand why the flavourful Lim Chee Guan bak kwa is so popular.

Be warned that Lim Chee Guan bak kwa can be addictive. It is hard to stop at a bite or two. Before too long, you may finish your haul of bak kwa and be tempted to join the ridiculously long queues for the decadent bak kwa. If that happens, you may be comforted to know that you are helping to uphold a Chinese New Year tradition in Singapore.
