Colonial Club Paragon Orchard – new restaurant serving local favourites

Colonial Club Paragon Orchard is a new restaurant that opened in the basement of this upmarket Orchard Road shopping mall. Thankfully, it isn’t another upmarket restaurant with fancy dishes. They serve local favourites like chicken rice and nasi goreng in a nice setting. The prices are not too painful as well. It looks like Colonial Club Signatures is a great place to try good local food at Orchard at an affordable price.

The decor of the Colonial Club Paragon restaurant is bright and simple. The dual-coloured wicker chairs remind us of some French cafes. It is not luxurious but tastefully done up.

Colonial Club Paragon Menu

Here are pictures of some pages from the Colonial Club Paragon menu. Big bright photos ensure that diners know what to expect. We tried an assortment of items from the menu.

Buah Keluak Pie Tee

For starters, we had the buah keluak pie tee ($9) and the ayam roti ($9.90). The pie tee shells were not very crispy but the flavour of the buah keluak gave this familiar dish a Peranakan twist. Best eaten with the chilli sauce that comes which this dish.

The ayam roti was like thick sliced French toast stuffed with spicy minced chicken and cucumber. It sounds weird but the combination of tastes worked very well.

Our main plates were the Indomee Goreng with Crispy Chicken Rendang ($13.90) and Signature Nasi Lemak Tower ($16.90). Both were very good and are worth trying if you are thinking of dining at Colonial Club Signatures. The crispy chicken was the highlight of the mee goreng dish. They have prepared it such that the external surfaces were totally crispy while leaving the insides moist.

The nasi lemak was more expensive than the other items, but we liked the presentation and overall taste of the dish. The secret weapon is the otah that is barely visible at the bottom of the rice. It had a smooth texture, mild spicy but complex taste.

We ended our meal with a couple of desserts and coffee. The coconut ice-cream in shell ($7.50) and the chendol ($6) were ok but not memorable like the savoury dishes. Coffee was average but very reasonably priced at $2 for kopi-o and $2.50 (with milk),
