Lunch at Imperial Treasure Teochew Ion, Teochew restaurant at Orchard Road.

Imperial Treasure Teochew Ion Orchard is a Teochew restaurant at Orchard Road. It received one Michelin star in the 2018 Michelin Guide Singapore. It had been some time since our last visit to this Teochew restaurant, having been there when they first opened in December 2016. You can see more pictures of the restaurant in our post on our previous visit. We decided to go there for a simple Teochew lunch before the very busy CNY 2019 festive season kicked in.

The place looked very much the same as when we last visited. This time, we were seated in the internal dining area that has no windows. It felt more cosy but lacks the open spacious feel of the main dining area. It is probably the most attractive Teochew restaurant at Orchard Road.

Imperial Treasure Teochew Ion Orchard Menu

Here are pictures of some pages from the Imperial Treasure Ion menu. There is a lunchtime dim sum menu which contains mostly Cantonese dim sum items and some Teochew dim sum items.

Pork and Duck

We started our meal with an order each of the roasted pork ($14) and marinated sliced duck ($20). The roast pork was not bad in general but we would have preferred the skin to be less dry and hard. In contrast, the marinated duck was soft and juicy. The bean curd that comes with the duck almost stole the show from the duck. It was smooth and almost creamy to the touch. The light gravy enhanced the taste. Teochew diners will love this dish eaten with a dip into the garlic vinegar sauce.

Dumplings and Porridge

Siew mai (steamed pork dumpling in Teochew style)

Those who like teochew porridge will love the congee with sliced pomfret ($16) at this Teochew restaurant in Orchard Road. The porridge was lightly flavoured and the thick slices of pomfret were white and clean-tasting. We ordered the siew mai ($6.20) as we thought it was the dim sum item most associated with Teochew cuisine. It was quite average.

Steamed Fish and Noodles

Steamed fish is a dish often associated with Teochew dining. On special occasions, the pomfret is the steamed fish of choice. At $12 per 100g, it is a pricey dish for an ordinary lunch. We decided instead to try the humble grey mullet. This is a humble fish sometimes available at Teochew porridge stalls at a modest price. Eating it at a Michelin star Teochew restaurant at Orchard Road costs a bit more. The steamed grey mullet with soy bean sauce ($40) was served freshly cooked and piping hot (in contrast to the pre-cooked and cold version). Considerable amount of garnishing was added to the fish. Perhaps to counter the sometimes muddy taste of this fish. But it was hardly necessary in this case as the fish was fresh and had a good taste.

Our final dish was stewed mee pok with pork liver and minced pork in Teochew style ($20). It sounded like fancy ‘bak chor mee’ when we read it in the menu, but we ordered it anyway as we like mee pok. The stewed mee pok had some resemblance to the hawker version. But the noodles were more crunchy (or “Q”). The sauce was more refined and most importantly the liver was served in large thick pieces. We were glad they did not have a strong liver flavour. It was a very good mee pok dish.

Overall, it was an enjoyable lunch at the Imperial Treasure Teochew restaurant at Orchard Road. We had selected some classic Teochew dishes and they delivered very good and refined versions of them.
