Affogato Bar at Cluny Court

Affogato Bar is a tiny cafe in Cluny Court, the small shopping arcade across the Botanic Garden MRT station. It is one of a few eateries in this building at the junction of Cluny Road and Bukit Timah Road. Each of them is small, but together they make up an interesting warren of assorted and specialised food places in this part of Singapore. We stopped by for coffee and dessert at Affogato Bar recently.

The space at Affogato Bar is small. Half of it is used for food preparation. The rest of the space can seat about ten people. According to Wikipedia, “… affogato (Italian for “drowned”) is an Italian coffee-based dessert. An interesting selection of ice-cream is available at Affogato Bar. Each of them ready to be “drowned” in some strong coffee for the creation of affogato.

Affogato Bar Menu

Here are pictures of some pages of the Affogato Bar menu. In addition to coffee and desserts, there are a few other items like sandwiches and salad. We did not concern ourselves with these items. We were there for a specific purpose – to try their coffee and affogato.

Our iced latte ($6) arrived first. The taste of the coffee was superb. The coffee was very strong but did not have any bad effects we sometimes get from strong coffee such as bitterness and sourness. It was a good sign of things to come.

Banana Ramble Affogato

As a sign of the store’s popularity, two of the signature affogato – La Opera and Death by Chocolate were sold out. We had our eye on the latter. The remaining signature item, Pot of Honey, did not sound as exciting. We selected the Banana Ramble ($13.90) from the “Standard Affogato” section of the menu.

The Banana Ramble Affogato was beautifully presented. Two scoops of butter pecan ice-cream, banana slices and pecan crumble were neatly contained in its own receptable. The double shot of espresso was on hand to drown them.

The combination of the all the ingredients worked so well. We liked the contrast of the crunch of the pecan crumble and the smootness of the fruit. The strong coffee was able to stand up to the sweetness of the other elements. The balance of coffee and sweetness was very good. We can now understand why Affogato Bar, this small cafe at Cluny Court, is always abuzz with activity.
