Go Ang Pratunam VivoCity – Michelin Bib Gourmand Chicken Rice from Bangkok

Go Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice was established in 1960 as a food stall specialising in Hainanese chicken rice in the Pratunam district of Bangkok. The brand is apparently well received in the area and in 2019, they were awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand Award in the Bangkok edition of the Michelin Guide. Go Ang Pratunam Vivo City is their second outlet in Singapore. The first Go Ang chicken rice in Singapore was opened in the NEX shopping mall in late 2018.

Go Ang Pratunam VivoCity is located in level B2 of the mall, near the MRT Harbourfront exit. It is a simply laid out place.

The Go Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice restaurant is surprising similar to a local Singapore casual restaurant. Go Ang’s menu could easily be mistaken for one that we find in a local tze char restaurant. Familiar items like bean sprouts with salted fish, tri-egg with poached spinach, chye poh omelette etc. Even the cooked chickens hanging on display look familiar. We ordered an assorted mix of dishes.

I can say that most of the dishes were presented and tasted very similar to their equivalent dishes found in Singapore dishes. We had a couple of single portions of chicken rice ($5.50 for chicken thigh / $4.50 for regular). The chicken was close to that of a decent chicken rice stall in Singapore. The chicken rice was very good. It was slightly more moist than the typical Singapore style, but very fragrant and tasty. The biggest difference was the sauce provided. The chilli sauce was only mildly spicy and not as fiery as the Singapore version.

The spinach with three types of eggs (fresh, salted and century) and the prawn omelette ($9.50) were both very local in nature.

The dark sauce tofu ($8) was a more unusual and tasty dish. A type of dish that will go better with plain porridge rather than chicken rice.

Desserts

We can summarise the Thai desserts at Go Ang Pratunam Singapore with these words – no looks but lots of personality. We are used to Thai desserts being served in dainty, pretty portions. The ones that we got were shovelled into plain glasses without any aesthetic appeal.

Red Ruby (left) and Steamed Tapioca with Coconut Cream

Our desserts were steamed tapioca with coconut cream ($4.50), homemade black glutinous rice ($4.50) and red ruby with coconut ice-cream ($5). All of them were very good. We had more fun with them than the savoury food. We discovered that these three go well together. Mix and match versions tasted wonderful. Black glutinous rice goes well with tapioca or with coconut ice cream …etc.
