The Dumpling Festival (端午节 “Duan Wu Jie” ), or Dragon Boat Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Dumpling Festival 2019 falls on 7 June. For millenniums 端午节 “Duan Wu Jie” has been marked by eating “Zong Zi” (糯米) – bamboo leaf-wrapped steamed glutinous rice dumplings. In Singapore, we get a variety of delicious glutinous rice dumplings, which we also called “Bak Chang”, all year round. However, for the Dumpling Festival, restaurant and chefs create some extra special treats.

Hai Tien Lo (海天楼) presents an ensemble of handcrafted rice dumplings made up of premium glutinous rice and superb ingredients, meticulously hand-wrapped in bamboo leaves.

This Dumpling Festival 2019, besides the classic favourites, Executive Chef Ben Zeng 曾泽彬) adapts well-loved Cantonese delicacies into two special dumpling varieties –  the Classic Pork Belly and Salted Fish Dumpling 咸鱼花腩粽 ($18.80) and the Crystal Dumpling with Red Bean and Sago 红豆水晶西米粽 ($8.80).

Hai Tien Lo’s Traditional Jumbo Rice Dumpling ($33.80) will also be available this dumpling festival with a new ingredient – roasted duck.

Other handcrafted flavours include Cantonese Pork Dumpling with Salted Egg Yolk 廣東咸蛋鮮肉粽 ($13.80 ) featuring pork belly, salted egg yolk and green beans as well as Traditional Nyonya Dumpling 南洋娘惹粽 ($9.80) filled with pork, candied melon, Japanese mushrooms, shallots and garlic.

Hoo Kee Bak Chang 和记肉粽 is included in Bib Gourmand 2017 Singapore list. Hoo Kee sells Hokkien style dumplings or bak chang all year round. There is the original flavour which costs $3 each. The bak chang with mushroom and bak chang with salted egg yolk would be $4 each. The prices go up as the dumpling festival draws closer. From 25 May, the prices will increase by $1 per dumpling.
