Capitol Milk Bar is one of the latest food outlets at The Capitol Kempinski hotel. This new opening brings even more choices to the Capitol Piazza zone. The new Capitol Milk Bar is a re-creation of the Magnolia Snack Bar from back in the 1960’s when it was in the old Capitol Building Singapore. We thought it was a good re-creation, except for one important thing.
I must first confess that I have not been to the original Magnolia Snack Bar at the Capitol Building in the 60s. I cannot say whether the new Capitol Milk Bar at Capitol Piazza is an authentic replica. If the intention of Capitol Kempinski was to create an American diner eatery with the style harking back to the 60s, they have largely succeeded.
American diner styled restaurants such as the new Capitol Milk Bar bring make memories of the TV series Happy Days. The diner was the place where Richie Cunningham and Fonzie and friends would hang out. Food was only one of the reasons they were there. There was one thing we missed in our 2019 version – mood. It was nice and peaceful but no vibrancy. There was no jukebox or young diners. Most of our fellow diners were not very youthful, probably there to re-live their memories of the Magnolia Snack Bar.
Which is strange as the website describes the diner as follows: “… this new ‘rock around the clock’ diner is where to be for burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, milkshakes, …, and finger-snapping fun for the whole family.” It is also a pity as some of the coasters have templates that can be used as notes to someone you think is cute. The shy Richie Cunningham would have found these handy.
Capitol Milk Bar Menu
Here are pictures of the Capitol Milk Bar Menu. It is a simple menu with burgers and hotdogs being the main food categories. Milkshakes and floats are the main beverage categories. There is no hot tea or coffee on the menu. Perhaps that was the case in the old Magnolia Milk Bar.
There was a set menu of a Capitol Burger, a New York Hotdog and one Sundae. Priced at $34++ it was cheaper than if we bought them separately. We shared this combination, a Frankfurter ($10++) and some sweet potato fries ($5++).
The New Yorker hotdog and the Frankfurter were quite close in taste. If we came here again, we would just get the cheaper New Yorker and save a dollar. Taste wise they were good but not exceptional.
The Capitol Burger impressed us with the size of the beef pattie which was thick and substantial. It also came with a good amount of sweet potato fries. But like the hotdogs, it was a burger that we cannot fault but there was also nothing memorable as well.
Fortunately, the banana split, which was our choice of the sundae as part of our set meal, did bring a smile to our faces. The banana, the chocolate ice cream and various other things, all add up to an enjoyable dessert. It may well have been the fact that we have not had banana split for a long, long time. Whatever the reason, this could be reason enough for us to visit again. Perhaps that may be what the sign “CAPITOL MILK BAR IN TIME” meant.
