Singaporeans are familiar with Shang Palace, the popular Chinese restaurant in Shangri-La Hotel. One of the signature dishes of Michelin-starred Cantonese Chef Mok Kit Keung of Shang Palace is Bamboo Noodles with Dark Soya Sauce. The dish is now made more accessible for ordinary patrons. Shang Social (香聚 ) Jewel Changi Airport, the first standalone dining establishment by the Shangri-La Group, has a menu curated with inputs from three of Shangri-La’s acclaimed master chefs and includes the famed bamboo noodles of Chef Mok.
Shang Social Jewel Changi Airport
Shang Social (香聚 ) is the Shangri-La Group’s first venture into standalone food and beverage (F&B) outlets outside of a hotel setting. The new F&B establishment in Jewel Changi Airport comprises Dining, Bar & MRKT, a formal dining space, a bar and casual dining area respectively.
The formal dining place is well appointed but does not look that formal. It is casually elegant and offers comfortable seats.
The art deco style bar looks interesting and impressive. You can enjoy Chinese tapas, like smoked tea fish and deep fried cuttlefish, and sip cocktails or specialty Chinese tea at the 18-seater bar.
The MRKT has a retail space on one side an open kitchen on the other side and communal dining tables in between. There is a certain buzz about the place but seats are not the most comfortable.
Shang Social Menu
The Shang Social Dining menu offers a good selection of dishes which pay tribute to three distinctive Chinese cuisines – Cantonese, Huaiyang, and Sichuan. Below are pictures of a few pages of the menu of Shang Social Dining.
The Shang Social MRKT menu is a simple one sheet affair which also serves as the order chit. Besides bamboo noodles, there are also dim sum, BBQ meats and dishes like mapo beancurd and chicken claypot.
Quick Bite at Shang Social
We were at Jewel Changi Airport recently and decided to have a quick bite at Shang Social. We were shown to a table at the MRKT section but were told that we could also order from the main Dining Menu. The friendly service staff warned us that we might have to wait for a bit for the dishes from the Dining Menu.
From the MRKT Menu, we selected the Pan Fried Pork Bun ($2.50 per piece) and the Stewed Beef Brisket Bamboo Noodles ($13). We also ordered the Seafood Broth with Rice ($18) and Snow Pear with Peach Gum & Aloe Vera ($8) from the Dining Menu.
MRKT Menu
The Pan Fried Pork Bun and the Bamboo Noodles from the MRKT Menu were indeed served very promptly – within a few minutes after our orders were taken.
The pork bun had a crisp bottom part crusted with sesame seeds with the upper portion pillowy soft and fluffy. The meat filling was like a stew. The meat was finely minced and not chunky. On the whole the bun was quite delicious. The Stewed Beef Brisket Bamboo Noodles was quite a simple and straightforward dish. The collagen rich beef tendon came in large pieces and were full of flavours. The noodles had excellent texture – soft but with the right degree bounciness. The bamboo noodles of Shang Social MRKT was a palatable dish.
Dining Menu
The Seafood Broth with Rice in Iron Pot from the Dining Menu did take a while to arrive but it was worth the wait. The rice, topped with prawns and scallops, was served in an iron bowl. The seafood broth was then theatrically poured over the rice at the table. Some rice crispies were provided to be sprinkled over the broth. It was not all show for the eyes. It was exciting for the palate too. The prawns and scallops were fresh with natural sweetness and the broth was rich and tasty. The rice crispies added a contrasting texture. The dish was enjoyable elevated comfort food.
We ended our simple meal on a sweet note with Snow Pear with Peach Gum & Aloe Vera dessert. It was beautifully presented – not too sweet and was very refreshing.
Gem in Jewel Changi
Shang Social Jewel Changi Airport is an interesting concept which offers a variety of F&B options in a stylish space. You sit alone at the Bar and sip intriguing cocktails or have a communal meal at the casual dining MRKT. You can dine in comfort at the more formal Dining where the food also looks good. Whichever section of Shang Social you may be you can expect good food. We think Shang Social is a little gem in the Jewel.
