Tekong Seafood Restaurant in Changi Village was once on Tekong Island. It is now on the Singapore mainland, at the north eastern tip of Singapore which is about as close as you can get to Tekong without taking a boat. It is a no-frills Chinese restaurant specialising in seafood, some of which are caught by local fisherman.
Changi Village is quite a long way to travel from the central parts of Singapore. But I can see why it is quite crowded on weekends. It feels like a different world. There are some hotels here such as Village Hotel and Changi Cove which are useful as staycation options in Singapore. There are lots of f & b options within walking distance and nightspots open up in the evenings. Changi Pier is right in front of Tekong Restaurant. Pulau Ubin is a short boat ride away. The Changi Point Coastal Walk is nearby. A 20 minute walk on it takes you to the best vantage place for plane spotting. That is where the planes fly overhead to land at Changi airport.
Tekong Seafood Restaurant is like a Chinese restaurant from the 80s. The familiar restaurant style chairs and tables with tablecloths. The lighting is bright and white. A stack of aquariums lie at the centre of the restaurant, displaying the live fish and crustaceans available. There is not much by way of aesthetics. Practicality is the name of the game here.
Tekong Seafood Menu
Here are pictures of some pages from the Tekong Seafood Restaurant. Although it looks like a restaurant from the 80s, it is quite progressive in some ways. Reservations can be made online via the CHOPE system. It has a website that contains good information about the restaurant, including the full menu with prices. Which is more than can be said about many other restaurants. The star attraction of the restaurant are the crabs. They cost $6.80 per 100g which sounds reasonable in this day and age. The weekday crab deal is really good – $38 for a crab (600 to 700g). We will return on a weekday if we are in Changi.
What we ate at Changi
We had an assorted mix of food that day. The manis vegetable is something which is not often seen. Apparently this is also known as sayur manis or sweet leaf vegetable. It was served chopped up and fried with eggs. Some ikan billis were sprinkled on top. It was a pleasant dish that reminded me of cooked sweet potato leaves. We will be happy to order this again.
The sweet and sour pork was ok but not exceptional. This is a dish that can be found in many places. We would probably try something else on the next visit.
The kampong chicken with rice wine sounded like a dish that would suit our environment. But we were not fond of it. The broth was too sweet for our liking.
Fish dishes in a seafood restaurant can be expensive, especially those that are marked “market price”. The Tekong Seafood Restaurant menu has a long list of fishes. We like the fact that their prices are stated from the promfrets to the grouper and parrot fish. It is a commendable practice. We tried the most humble fish dish – 本地奎笼鱼 Kelong Fish $3.80 /100g. It turned out to be small fishes served in a dark sauce. They look a bit like rabbit fish, but was probably not as rabbit fish was a specific item on the menu. Whatever they were they were fresh and the meat was firm and tasty.
The highlight of the day was the chilli crab, eaten with fried man tou. The quality of crab was very good. The shell was thick and fill with meat. Texture of the crab was firm and fresh. The gravy was excellent in flavour although some said that it was a bit spicy. The only negative for me was that it did not look very good.
