EVERY Havelock is a Japanese mini-supermarket & cafe in Havelock Road where you can almost feel like you are actually in Japan. With J-Pop music in the background, you can shop for food and beverages typically found in Japanese convenience stores or enjoy an affordable Japanese cafe meal.
Isetan Office Building
There is a small standalone commercial building along a quiet stretch of Havelock Road, just off Zion Road. It is known as the Isetan Office Building. If you are not surprised that Isetan has an office building in Havelock Road, you must be of a certain generation. You might be one of the few who knew that the first Japanese department store in Singapore was Isetan Havelock. Isetan flagship store occupied four floors of Apollo Hotel at Havelock, now known as Furama Riverfront Hotel, from 1972 till 1993.
Isetan Office Building is well known to bak kut teh fans because the popular Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh (亚华肉骨茶) is located on the ground floor of the building. Earlier this year, EVERY opened up next to Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh.
EVERY has the typical Japanese quirky tagline – Everything is here. “Everything” is a bit of a stretch but then again it has lots of food and snacks, hot and cold beverages and plenty of alcohol – that is almost everything we need to make us happy.
EVERY Havelock is divided into two sections by the cashier’s counter in the middle. On one side there are well stocked shelves and cold storage fridge display. There is a microwave oven for heating up food.
On the other side of the cashier’s counter is an open kitchen and the main dining area. There are also bar tables out in the non-airconditioned corridor.
EVERY Cafe Menu
EVERY Cafe offers Japanese dishes as well as Japanese style Western food. There are roast beef, vongole pasta and club sandwich as well as katsu don, ramen and Japanese curry rice on the menu of EVERY Cafe. Below are pictures of random pages of the menu.
The a la carte menu allows you to make it a set meal with addons of various combinations of soup, salad, drink and desserts. There are also various daily set deals and weekday specials which offer good value.
EVERY Meal is a Good Meal
EVERY Cafe operates on a self-service system. You place your order and pay at the cashier’s counter. A buzzer will be given to you to prompt you to collect your food and beverages when they are ready. Help yourself to soup and other beverages, if they are part of the set you ordered, from the various stations near the cashier’s counter.
We were at EVERY Cafe on a Friday so we had the Friday special of Gyudon & Onsen Tamago Set ($10). We also ordered Beef Tendon Curry Rice ($9.80), a hot flat white ($3.50) and iced black coffee ($2.80). The wait for the food and beverages was fairly short.
The Gyudon & Onsen Tamago Set came with miso soup and salad. Everything was of the expected standard. The beef rice bowl had good quality rice topped with simmered beef and onions. There was a balance of sweet and savoury flavours. It was a simple enjoyable meal.
The Beef Tendon Curry Rice was also good. The slow cooked beef tendon was tasty and had a very smooth and tender texture. The curry was thick and rich in flavours. It was a very good version of Japanese curry rice at that price point.
The coffee was not great but still better than the coffee we could get at our local convenience stores.
Easy to be happy at EVERY Cafe
We like EVERY Havelock. The place is pleasant and there is a casual relaxed atmosphere. Overall, we were happy with the food we tried at EVERY Cafe. Perhaps our meal would have been even more delightful had we taken up their advice – Enjoy Good Alcohol and be Happy!
