La Scala Ristorante, new Italian restaurant at Capitol Kempinski - a tale of two lunches

La Scala Ristorante is the new Italian restaurant at The Arcade at the Capitol Kempinski Hotel. Restaurants in this area are integrated with the adjoining Capitol Piazza and Capitol Theatre. We were there for lunch on two occasions. Our conclusion was that the set lunch is the way to go.

La Scala Ristorante has a one and a half storey layout. There is a cosy balcony upstairs which seems like a place to have a good view of the surrounding. We were first there on a weekday when the set lunch was available and the other visit was on a weekend. If we go again, we will pick a day when the set lunch is available.

La Scala Ristorante Set Lunch menu (Sep 2019)

For our starters, we selected the mozzarella cheese salad and eggplant in tomato sauce. Both were tasty and a nice way to start a lunch.

Our main courses were the pan-fried seabass and braised lamb shank. They were both substantial dishes and very well prepared. The lamb in particular was really tender and not gamey. Both items are only available on the set lunch menu.

We only had one dessert, the tiramisu which ended our set lunch meal at La Scala Ristorante, Capitol Kempinski on a sweet note.

La Scala Weekend Lunch

Our second visit was on a weekend when we had to choose from the a la carte menu. The items were mostly pasta and pizza dishes which we thought was less interesting than the set menu. We decided to share a grilled octopus starter ($22++) and a pizza ($26++).

We ordered a couple of wines by the glass. They were reasonably priced at around $9 per glass.

The grilled octopus was a lovely dish. The presentation was attractive and the taste was good.

Unfortunately we were not so enamoured with the Proscuitto and Funghi Pizza. The toppings of ham and mushroom were sparsely sprinkled on the pizza. The pizza crust had a thick, tough ring which was a challenge for our jaws. It was a struggle eating it. We gave up after a while.

Despite the different food experiences on two occasions. We were glad that the good and polite service at La Scala Ristorante was a constant.
