Katasumi Koohii 一隅珈琲 – charming cafe in a bookstore at Bukit Pasoh (Closed)

Bukit Pasoh is a fascinating area between New Bridge Road and Neil Road with conservation shophouses of the Transitional and Art Deco styles. Along Bukit Pasoh Road there is an interesting book shop called 草根書室 Grassroots Book Room, which carries predominantly Chinese titles. At the back of the book shop is a small cafe with an intriguing name. The cafe in a bookstore at Bukit Pasoh is named Katasumi Koohii 一隅珈琲.

Grassroots Book Room

草根書室 Grassroots Book Room is a Chinese independent bookstore and publishing house founded in 1995 by writer and Cultural Medallion recipient Yeng Pway Ngon. The book shop occupies the front portion of a long narrow shophouse in Bukit Pasoh. On its full-height wooden shelves are titles on history, Chinese and Western philosophy, art, film, drama as well as Chinese modern literature and children’s books.

The back of Grassroots Book Room merged into the Katasumi Koohii cafe. The small cafe in the bookstore at Bukit Pasoh has the typical Taiwanese rustic but artsy cafe atmosphere – equal parts hip and cosy.

Coffee & Cake @ Katasumi Koohii

We ordered black coffee ($5) and the Black Sesame Rare Cheese Cake ($7). No GST or service charge would be added to the bill. We could help ourselves to water from the water station.

The food and beverages took a little while to arrive but they were worth the wait. The coffee, brewed to order, was good, with pleasing aroma and flavour.

The cake was a Japanese style rare (no-bake) cheesecake. The sesame cheesecake had a delightful nutty flavour and was not too sweet. The toppings and cookies crumbs added an interesting mix of textures to the smooth creamy slab of cheese and sesame. It was a rather small but enjoyable portion of cake.

Coffee corner for quiet contemplation

Katasumi Koohii 一隅珈琲 is a quaint little cafe in a bookstore at Bukit Pasoh. People seem to speak in hushed tones in places with lots of books so there is a certain peace and quiet in Katasumi Koohii that is usually missing in busy cafes. We do not know the backstory of the name Katasumi Koohii, but it may have something to do with corner and coffee. The cafe in a bookstore at Bukit Pasoh is certainly a lovely corner for a good cup of coffee and perhaps some quiet contemplation.
