White Restaurant Suntec City – Sembawang White Bee Hoon’s new outlet

White Restaurant Suntec City is the newest outlet of the restaurant specialising in the Original Sembawang White Bee Hoon (三巴旺白米粉). This is their sixth outlet. The others are in Sembawang, Punggol, Sun Plaza, IMM and Jewel Changi.

Founded in 1999, the restaurant started as a hawker in Chong Pang Market. When the market closed in 2000, they moved to Jalan Tampang. The official name was You Huak Restaurant but the popularity of the signature dish made customers refer to them as the “Sembawang White Bee Hoon Restaurant.” The White Restaurant is now helmed by the founder Mr Tay King Huak’s 38-year-old son, – Mr Tay You Xian. They have grown from a 30-seater coffee shop unit with just five staff, to six restaurants and a central kitchen.

We are glad that they have to decided to open White Restaurant Suntec City. To us, it is the most central location, a convenient place to try the famous White Bee Hoon. This new restaurant located at the Suntec Fountain of Wealth. It joins the many restaurants at this circular zone around the base of the gigantic fountain. The decor is bright and pleasant.

Here are pictures of the White Restaurant Suntec City menu as well as a couple of promotional offers that are exclusive to opening of the new Suntec City outlet. The Mala White Bee Hoon looks enticing. The $6 price for selected dishes after 6 pm looks like good value for money. These opening promotions are indicated to end at the end of December and November 2019 respectively. Please note the T & Cs.

The Food

Of course we had to order the Sembawang White Bee Hoon ($12 for a medium portion). Although we have eaten this before, we still looked forward to eating it again. I think it is the very definition of comfort food. This mildly flavoured bee hoon dish had lots of prawns and pieces of squid. Eaten with a squeeze of lime juice and a bit of red chilli is the way we like it.

We also tried the homemade fried beancurd ($12.80, above picture) and the oyster omelette ($14.80). The bean curd was rather bland by itself. It was deep-fried with a layer of batter and tasted better with a dip into the sambal sauce. The oyster omelette was very good, as long as you get an oyster in your bite. The oysters are plump and sweet. Our only regret was that there were so few of them.

We had a plate of sambal kangkong ($11.80) which was probably the weakest dish of the day. It was not very exciting.

The homemade barley drinks ($3 each) had good tastes but were too sweet for us. We should remember to ask them to make it less sweet version in the future. Or just go for the water, which like the various sauces, were available for diners to help themselves to at the counter. We thought that was a sensible and efficient labour saving system.
