Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee – cheap & good food in Dunman

Dunman Food Centre, built in 1974, is one of the smallest food centres in Singapore. It has only about 30 stalls but it is the number of stalls with cheap and good food in a food centre that really counts. One of the several stalls that serves cheap and good food is Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee in Dunman Food Centre, where you can get tasty wanton noodles at $3.50 per bowl.

Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee is located in the lower level of the 2 storey Dunman Food Centre. It right next to the Say Seng Famous Tau Kwa Pau stall. The wanton noddles shop opens early and there are many customers who go there for breakfast.

When we visited Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee, we were given a number tag. The tag allowed us to place our order when the number was shown on the digital panel. Expect to wait 10 to 30 minutes if you are eating at Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee.

We ordered Wanton Mee with Chilli ($3.50), Wanton Mee with Soy Sauce ($3.50) and Fried Wantons ($3).

Deep Fied Wantons

We got quite a lot of fried wantons for $3. They were small and not well stuffed but had really crispy skins. The crunchy wantons were enjoyable eaten on their own, with mayonnaise sauce as a dip or with the wanton noodles.

Wanton Mee with Soy Sauce or with Chilli

The noodles were served with a bowl of soup with 3 small pieces of boiled wantons. The soup was unremarkable. The wantons with minced meat filling had smooth slippery skins and were quite palatable.

Wanton Mee with Soy Sauce

Joo Chiat Ah Huat’s wanton noodles looked darker than those of other stalls, probably because of the soy sauce which was also added to the chilli version. The char siew they used was the generic version from suppliers. They were quite generous with the cut of char siew which was lean and sweetish.

The noodles were cooked just right and had a nice firmness with a springy texture. The Wanton Mee with Soy Sauce had noodles that were well coated with a good balance of oil and soy sauce. The dominant taste was savouriness. On the whole, the dish was simple comfort food that was tasty.

Wanton Mee with Chilli

The Wanton Mee with Chilli was essentially the same as the Soy Sauce version except that it had less soy sauce in the mix and, of course, chilli sauce was added. The chilli was spicy but now overwhelming.

Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee seems to have a big fan base. They do serve nice tasty wanton noodles at a very reasonable price. It is certainly a hawker stall to add to our list of places with cheap and good food.
