Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle & Ah Yee HK Roasted, Old Airport Road Hawker Centre

Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre and char siew rice from Ah Yee Hong Kong Roasted were the yummy local delights that we ended up eating when we were in the Mountbatten MRT Station vicinity recently.

Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle

The Old Airport Road Food Centre does not need much introduction. It is one of the most popular hawker food centres in Singapore. There is a large selection of local food available. Many of them have the reputation of being one of the best in Singapore in their respectively categories. At lunch time it is a crowded place as many people in the area head there for lunch. We do not usually plan in advance what to eat. There are many good food choices spread out over the place. We only decide on the food after surveying the length of queues and the table availability.

Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle

Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle at Old Airport Road is one of the highly rated stalls. Many regard it as one of the best prawn noodles in Singapore. There was a short queue but the length of queue may be misleading as they employ a buzzer system. Customers place their order, make payment and are handed a buzzer. It is a good system as we can then secure a table and be seated while waiting for the food to get ready.

We ordered the standard portions of prawn noodles and pork rib noodles ($4.50 each). For noodles, we selected a mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon. We like this combination as the former provides the bouncy texture and the bee hoon absorbs a lot of soup flavour.

The soup for both types of noodles was the same. It was a rich seafood broth. Not the strongest prawn flavour we have tried ( I think the strongest prawn flavour is the one at Adam Road Hawker centre), but certainly robust enough for us. It has a good balanced taste. The prawns were large and fresh. We would have liked it more if the prawns were de-shelled, at least partially leaving the head. There is a high risk of staining our shirts in the process of removing the shells. But this was certainly a very good bowl of prawn noodles.

For those who prefer meat to prawns, they can opt for the pork rib version. One can get to enjoy the prawn broth with the noodles and not have to struggle with the prawns. Besides, the pork ribs were very good. Reasonably meaty and very soft. The meat falls easily off the bone and the flavour was very good. Actually, this is a better option especially for those having lunch in a new white business shirt.

We found a table near the Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle Stall. Anticipating some time before our buzzer will sound, we scanned the nearby stalls. Ah Yee Hong Kong Roasted looked like a stall that will provide nice complementary food. The usual roasted meat items – roast pork, duck and char siew were on displayed. We decided to have some char siew rice.

A regular plate of char siew rice at Ah Yee Hong Kong Roasted costs $4. We asked for char siew rice with extra char siew. It was a generous serving of char siew rice for $6. We think it was definitely worth paying an extra $2. The meat was soft and juicy. The sweet sauce was also nice. It would have been even better if there were more burnt bits at the edges of the meat.
