Grain Alley – good new brunch spot in Orchard Road

Singapore has no lack of places for brunch and all day breakfast. Many are located in the hipster enclaves or in quaint locations, which may not be the most accessible. If you are looking for a convenient brunch spot in Singapore’s prime shopping district, Grain Alley is a new cafe in Orchard Central that will fit the bill.

Grain Alley is a new cafe that opened earlier this year. It is located on the ground level of Orchard Central. The road facing entrance is just opposite The Centrepoint.

The cafe combines modern style decor with industrial style coffee shop design. There are exposed ceiling beams and pipes but the floors are nicely tiled. Different sections of Grain Alley have different looks – each is attractive and Instagramable.

The bar and food preparation area takes up most of the main central portion of the cafe. There are some seats along the long narrow space next to the bar. Most of the tables are at the front, facing Orchard Road, and at the rear, facing the mall atrium – catering to people’s desire to see and be seen.

Grain Alley has a Mediterranean focused menu – with mainly all day breakfast and brunch items. There is a fair selection of pastries and cakes.

Brunch @ Grain Alley

We had brunch at Grain Alley recently. We picked items from the All Day Breakfast section – Croque Monsieur ($13) and Terrific Tuna Melt ($11). An Americano was $4 and Cappuccino was $6.

The food was nicely presented on small wooden cutting boards. They were very photogenic. However, unless you have been well trained in finishing school, it would be quite impossible to eat from the small cutting boards without making a mess on the table.

Croque Monsieur was the fancy French version of ham and cheese sandwich. The soft fluffy bread was very nice and the ham was good – not sure what else could be said of the simple but delectable ham and cheese sandwich.

The coffee at Grain Alley was good. We would add Grain Alley to our list of top spots in Orchard Road for artisanal coffee.

The humble Tuna Melt was really dressed up to look terrific – don’t think we had seen a better looking tuna sandwich. It was great tasting too. The creamy tuna and mayonnaise blend was delectable and the lettuce and tomatoes added colour, textures and flavours to the mix. The fried egg and bacon bits definitely enhanced the enjoyment of the great looking taostie.

Great new spot in Orchard

We think that Grain Alley is a great new spot in Orchard Road whether you want a chill out place for brunch, a charming bar for drinks in the evening or simply a cosy haven for coffee and snacks in between shopping. It is a contemporary urban coffee shop done right.
