Braseiro is a small French steakhouse in Joo Chiat popular for its quality flame-grilled meat handmade French fries. Late last year it opened Burger Frites across the road, serving burgers and fries. In the short time since its opening, Burger Frites has earned a reputation for its quality hamburgers.
Burger Frites in Joo Chiat
Burger Frites occupies the ground floor of a spacious shophouse in Joo Chiat. Its interiors are fairly basic. It has the atmosphere more of a pub than a family restaurant, although there is a cosy lounge corner.
Menu of Burger Frites
The name of the restaurant tells you that it serves burgers and frites (Dictionary.com says “frites is the French word for French fries … used on menus to indicate that the fries are prepared in the Belgian or French style. But more often the word is simply used to make them sound fancier“).
The menu of Burger Frites is short and sweet. There are beef burgers and chicken burgers, French fries, a few snacks and desserts.
Burgers & Fries in Joo Chiat
We went to Burger Frites in Joo Chiat to have, guess what, burgers and fries. We ordered a Beef Burger ($16) with Fries ($4) and a Bacon Beef Burger ($18). Service charge and GST would be added to the bill.
If you thought that because of its connection to Braseiro French Restaurant and the use of “Frites” in its name, the food might be served in dainty plates and tiny portions, you would be wrong. Burger Frites’ food come in generous portion size and are served without plates or utensils. A single order of fries is more than enough to be shared by two. The burgers come in paper pockets so that they could be eaten using hands without making too much of a mess. Everything is served on a sheet of paper over a plastic tray.
The burgers used soft brioche buns. The 180g Angus beef patty was was nicely cooked – just slightly charred and had a good smokiness. It was juicy and flavourful. There were no fancy distracting ingredients or sauces; just the basics – lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, ketchup & mustard. It was a good quality burger well put together and was enjoyable.
The Bacon Burger was essentially the same beef burger with extra toppings of turkey bacon and cheese. The extra ingredients added richness to the mix but it was still the delectable beef patty that carried the dish.
Best in Joo Chiat
Burger Frites’ prices (with service charge and GST added) were a tad high we thought but the burgers were good though. Many others must have also enjoyed the food at Burger Frites as it had been listed in some articles (eg. SgMagazine and Weekender) as one of the best places in Singapore for burgers. We have not visited enough burger restaurants in Singapore to be able to rank them nationwide. However, we can say the burgers of Burger Frites are certainly among the best in Joo Chiat, Katong and maybe East Coast.
