New C Cafe in Joo Chiat

There so many nice cafes in the Joo Chiat- Katong area. The new C Cafe in Joo Chiat is right next to Homeground Coffee Roasters and just opposite Sinpopo. Avenue Cafe and Nine-Thirty are just a few metres away and there is another new specialty coffee cafe – Kings Cart Coffee Factory – just further down the road.

Opened in late August 2020, the new C Cafe occupies one the the old Joo Chiat shophouses – which typically has a narrow frontage but is very long. The interior of the cafe has a white and grey with light wood theme. It is bright and welcoming and the narrow space does not feel too congested.

There are modular cafe tables, a high communal table and counter seats. The long counter near the entrance has charging points for mobile phones and laptops. C Cafe can be suitable for the family, a couple or a solo diner.

There is a self-service water point in the rear. The barista bar takes centre stage. There are impressive coffee making equipment on display including the bright red AREMDE’s Nexus One professional coffee machine.

The Story of C

The new cafe is founded by Ashley Cho and Nicholas Wong, who describe themselves as a “medical student who didn’t want to be a doctor and…an aspiring vet who became a banker”. They are also freelance magicians and, if you are lucky enough, they will perform Card tricks to entertain you while you sip on your Coffee.

The high table in the middle of the cafe is supposed to be the Magic Table, where you can watch the cafe owners do their magic tricks from time to time.

So the card trick connection explains the first part of “Cards, Choices & Connections” tagline. The explanation for the rest of the tagline is rather philosophical and we shall leave it to you to read about it on the website of the cafe.

C Cafe Menu

The menu of the new C Cafe, obligatorily, is designed to look like a deck of playing cards. The menu is fairly simple – toasts, waffle, salad and a few sides. It is a brunch and afternoon tea kind of place. Below are photos of the C Cafe Menu.

Brunch at the new C Cafe

We ordered the Breakfast for Champions ($24) and Chia Pudding ($8) with a Hot Flat White ($6.50) and Iced Latte ($7). No service charge or GST would be added to the bill. Order and payment were made at the cashier’s count at the barista bar. The food and beverages would be served to the table.

The chia seed pudding was topped with banana strawberry and blue berries and generously drizzled with honey. It was enjoyable guilt free food with super nutrients.

The Breakfast for Champions looked like a lot of food but the friendly staff assured us that it was low in calories. The fresh greens and cherry tomatoes did take up quite a lot of the plate to make the dish look heavier than it actually was. A sourdough toast was topped with bacon strips and poached eggs. Mushrooms, hash brown and sausage were other items on the dish. There was nothing we did not like.

The golden hash brown nuggets were very nice – hot and crispy with delicately fluffy and moist interior. They were way better than the typical hash browns we had eaten in fast food restaurants. The bacon and sausage were probably the least healthy parts of the breakfast but also what we enjoyed the most. They were just delicious.

The coffee, both hot and cold, were good. They had a nice aroma and were smooth and slightly chocolatey with little acidity. The taste of the coffee would linger in the mouth, in a nice way.

Good Food & Coffee

The prices at C Cafe are not low, but the menu prices are nett. We like the cosy welcoming atmosphere and the friendly staff. The food and coffee are good. The new C Cafe is a welcome addition to the bustling cafe scene in Joo Chiat.
