Starker Singapore closed all its outlets, including the well-patronised one in Katong Square, at the start of the circuit breaker. For a while Katong Square seemed sedate and the soundscape of people having a jolly good time was missing. Now it would appear that happy times are here again. Viva Loca (which apparently means Live Crazy in Spanish) took over the space of Starker Katong to make it a place where you can “Feel the Passion … Follow your Dreams ….. Live Crazy”.

Other than the new name and the new menu, almost everything else at the old Starker Katong was kept. So the new Viva Loca Restaurant & Bar in Katong Square has indoor seating as well as sheltered “outdoor seating”. The interiors still give you the impression of dining in the patio and garden of a rustic Mediterranean villa.

Viva Loca Katong Menu

The menu of Viva Loca Restaurant & Bar is described as “specially crafted small plates that are TAPAS inspired with our local flair”. Items include burgers, pizza, pasta and mains such as pork ribs and fish & chips. Local and Asian dishes are represented by items like crispy chai tow kway, rendang beef short ribs, spaghetti chilli crab and mala seafood pizza. Below are pictures of a few pages of the Viva Loca Katong Menu.

There is a rather extensive drinks lists. Weekday set lunch and high tea deals are available. The Happy Hour beers on tap deal runs all day long.

Katsu & Pizza at Viva Loca

We visited the new Viva Loca Restaurant & Bar at ordered the Pork Katsu ($12.90) and the Pizza Margarita ($16). The wait for the food was about 20 minutes. Iced water was served while we waited. The service was on the whole friendly and efficient.

The pork katsu was served with salad, mushroom and Japanese curry sauce. The breaded deep-fried pork cutlet was crispy and not oily. It combined very well with the flavourful Japanese curry.

Viva Loca’s pizza had a thin flaky pastry like crust that almost tasted like pie crust. It was an interesting departure from the more traditional pizza crust we were used to. On the whole, it was quite enjoyable

Livin’ la Vida Loca

The new Viva Loca Restaurant & Bar in Katong Square which opened in mid September seems to be drawing in the crowd, especially on weekends. The Happy Hour must be one of the reasons. The food at Viva Loca are not bad too, whether you are there mainly to eat or to drink. It can be a nice little spot to let your hair down and live the crazy life, for a few hours at least. Viva Loca Restaurant & Bar may not quite have the high energy of the club featured in Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca video but it is still a vibrant place where it is easy to eat, drink and be merry and forget the cares of the world for a while.
