Nicolas Le Restaurant is a small French restaurant in the Keong Saik area. It is well patronised by regulars who love the combination of good French food and wines with great atmosphere. It is possibly the best French restaurant in Singapore without any Michelin Star.
The Singapore Michelin Guide 2020 is headlined by Les Amis and Odette. They are both French restaurants and the only 3 Michelin Star restaurants in Singapore. Nicolas Le Restaurant is a cozy restaurant listed as a Michelin Plate restaurant. It has no M-stars and the decor is not as posh, but on a given day, a meal at Nicolas can be as enjoyable as the bigger names, especially if one has to pay for it.
Nicolas Le Restaurant Menu and Wine
Lunch at Nicolas Le Restaurant starts from $48++. There is a choice of starters, mains and dessert. Apart from the food, what is also interesting is the wine list. There is a good selection of wines from Burgundy. A fair selection of half bottles (375 ml) is available, which we find useful. We decided on the 2013 Domaine Perrot-Minot Morey Saint Denis La Rue de Vergy ($75).
The half bottle of wine is perfect for lunch. We do not get sleepy and will not fail any breathalyser test. The red Burgundy from Perrot-Minot was light, fruity and refined. It probably goes well with most kinds of food.
Starters
Our starters were pasta (picture above) and organic egg (picture below). The texture of the pasta was chewy. The taste of the sauce, made with burrata and Toulouse sausage was a mix of creamy and meaty. The egg was prepared “a la coque”, which I think means half boiled. Both are humble dishes but the balanced flavouring made them memorable.
Mains
Our choice of mains were rack of lamb (picture above) and Iberico pork (picture below). Both were delicately cooked and accompanied by yummy sauces. But we both agreed the lamb was the better choice. The tenderness and flavour of the Tasmanian lamb was excellent.
Desserts
The desserts at our Nicolas Le Restaurant lunch were more straighforward. Tiramisu and the chocolate cake were fine but not as impressive as the earlier dishes.
There was an option of adding cheese to the meal. The selection looked tempting but we did not take up the offer that day.
There was no dramatic smoke or exotic ingredients like sea urchin in our $48 lunch at Nicolas Le Restaurant. But it was good straightforward food, delivered with friendly service in a comfortable setting. We think that it is fit to be a candidate for the Best French Restaurant in Singapore with no Michelin Star award.
