Choice Cuts, a quaint vinyl record shop and cafe in Joo Chiat, has moved to its new premises across the road. It is now more like a cafe that also sells records.
Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee in MOX
Choice Cuts was located in MOX, a co-working space for creative entrepreneurs housed in Katong Point. The cafe cum record shop was a place with retro charm where the shelves of vinyl records and aroma of freshly brewed coffee would make you want to linger.
Joo Chiat Road Crossing
Perhaps as a nod to the Beatles’ Abbey Road crossing, Choice Cuts has made the Joo Chiat Road crossing from Katong Point to shophouse No. 446.
The small shophouse is long and narrow. Choice Cuts has moved the rustic shelves and furniture from the old premises to the new space.
There are shelves at the front of the new premises displaying books and vinyl records for sale.
The cashier’s counter and food preparation area are to the rear. The dining area is restricted to a narrow strip next to the counter. The DIY seats and benches from the old premises were brought over to the new space. They are not the most comfortable seats for those who want to hang around for a it in the cafe.
Menu of Choice Cuts
The food menu of Choice Cuts is fairly limited. In fact all the food and drinks available are listed on an overhead board. There may be a few other special items and cakes available from time to time.
Brunch at Choice Cuts
We visited Choice Cuts at its new space for brunch recently. We ordered a NYC Bacon Egg & Cheese Bagel ($13), a Bratwursts Chicken Hot Dawg ($12), a hot long black ($4.50) and iced long black ($5.50). There was a special weekend offer of paying an add-on of $1 for French onion soup, which we did not try to reisist.
The French onion soup in a paper cup was the dish of the meal. The rich caramelized onion broth was delicious.
The food came in paper boxes. The Bacon Egg & Cheese Bagel was about what you would expect. Those who like cheese should like the very cheesy bagel.
The hot dog was quite unusual. Toasted baguette was used instead of the usual hot dog bun. We found that to be a bit chewy. The fat sausage and toppings were very tasty. Overall, it was a very enjoyable hot dog.
The coffee was good. It was aromatic with clean aftertaste.
New & Better?
Why did Choice Cuts cross the road? We don’t really know. The new space looks nicer but it feels more compact and less comfortable. It is more accessible to cyclists, with a bicycle stand in front of the shop. What remains the same is that records and good coffee are still available.
