New Ubin Zhongshan Park Restaurant Review

New Ubin Zhongshan Park is located on the ground floor of the Ramada by Wyndham Hotel Singapore. Since New Ubin Seafood relocated from Pulau Ubin many years ago, they had operated out of several locations. Now, it seems like they have shortened the name and have opened up at multiple locations. The other outlets are New Ubin Tampines and New Ubin CHIJMES.

New Ubin Zhongshan Park Review of Lunch

New Ubin’s first-ever restaurant in a hotel within Ramada by Wyndham Singapore at Zhongshan Park looks like one of those typical hotel restaurants that serve the hotel buffet breakfast. It is a large bright place with lots of seating space.

New Ubin Zhongshan Park BYOB Restaurant

Although New Ubin has expanded to more outlets and in more upmarket locales like this hotel and at CHIJMES, we are glad that they have maintained their no corkage fee policy. It is one of the few restaurants that is a true BYOB restaurant in Singapore. Which makes the Zhongshan Park the best New Ubin outlet because it is connected to the Zhongshan Park mall which has NTUC Fairprice Finest as a tenant. It is so easy to pick a bottle of wine from the supermarket just before heading to the restaurant.

Our Lunch at New Ubin

Our wine of the day was a bottle of Spanish wine from the Rioja region. It was a pleasant wine to go with a simple meal and a good companion to go with the meats and fried items that we had that day. Chicken satay ($6.550 for 5 sticks) is always an enjoyable way to start a meal.

We tried the BBQ St. Louis cut pork ribs ($38.00). It is described in the menu as “finished in our charcoal oven & served with house-made barbecue sauce”. I guess it must have spent too short a time in the oven as the BBQ flavour was quite weak. It was our most expensive dish of the day but was the least enjoyable.

The other two dishes were much better. Squid paste you tiao ($12) is a deep fried item that goes so well with drinks. The squid paste stuffed in dough fritters has a crisp surface and a soft, almost chewy interior texture.

Another item that we tried for the first time at New Ubin was Boss Bee Hoon (老板米粉$13.00). This was a humble fried bee hoon with egg & chye sim dish. It is said to be fried “Boss-style”, i.e. according to the Pang family’s preference. An extremely oily dish – but we would probably order again for its intense ‘wok hei’ flavour.
