I think we might have just tasted the best egg tart in Singapore. After sampling many types of egg tarts over the years from restaurants and Hong Kong-style char chaan tangs in Singapore, this wonderful Portuguese egg tart turned up in a most unexpected place – an European cafe in the heart of the Lion City.
Berthold Delikatessen is a cafe at Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski which we have stopped by for coffee and dessert before.
Berthold is described as a cafe that “…brings the best of traditional German delicatessen and sophisticated European style cafés under one roof”. There is always a wonderful display of cakes and baked items at the counter. The Portuguese egg tart appears to be a permanent item on the menu but no particular attention is drawn to it and we had hardly taken notice of it during previous visits. Fortunately it is not touted as the best egg tart in Singapore or the price may not be $2.50 and the atmosphere at the cafe would not be so peaceful.
Some of the Best Egg Tarts in Singapore
We have not tried all the egg tarts in Singapore but we have certainly eaten quite a few. Egg tarts from Tai Cheong Bakery, Tong Heng, Tiong Bahru Galicier and Honolulu Cafe are are some that come to mind (see pictures below).
We also tried the Portuguese egg tart at a Portuguese restaurant in Singapore – Boca Restaurant. Sadly, it has since closed. The egg tarts were very good as well and attractively presented.
More recently in September 2020, we queued up for the highly anticipated Hoover egg tarts from Hong Kong (picture below), brought in by Joy Luck Teahouse (Ion Orchard). They were good but did not pull away from the strong competition as the one we recently ate at Berthold.
The Best Egg Tart in Singapore 2020
Oddly enough the reason we chose the egg tart at Berthold was its simplicity. We had moments earlier chosen a rather large and elaborate slice of carrot cake (which was also very enjoyable by the way). The smallish egg tart was selected as a counterpoint.
Why is it the best egg tart in Singapore? I suppose it ticks all the right boxes for us. The egg was “eggy” enough but not too much. Mildly sweet but not too sweet. The crust was light and crisp in the Portuguese egg tart style. The amount of caramelising was just right with some dark blisters on the surface and not too much. It is a simple product that also looks good.
