Soi 47 Thai Food is a back to basic Thai restaurant with 3 outlets in Singapore – one is located near Toa Payoh National Library, one in Temple Street and one in Lavender. The Lavender outlet is situated in a row of industrial shophouses along King Georges’ Avenue. The Refinery is on the other end of the same building.

From the outside, Soi 47 Thai Food looks as gritty as its neighbours, which include engineering and hardware businesses.

On the inside, Soi 47 Thai Food @ Lavender is spacious and quite pleasant. The shop space is deep and it has very high ceiling. The decor is simple but colourful. The place does feel like a fairly typical local eating house you will find along one of the sois in Bangkok.

All the major food groups and typical Thai dishes and desserts are covered. There is a wide variety of Thai “zhi char” dishes as well as one dish meals, catering to families and groups as well as the solo diners.

Lunch at Soi 47 King Georges’ Avenue

We visited Soi 47 at King Georges’ Avenue for lunch recently.

Chang Beer was available at just $6 per bottle but we decided to have the refreshing Fresh Thai Coconut ($4) to quench our thirst on a hot afternoon.

For the food, we chose 2 one dish meals – Phad Thai with Chicken ($5.50) and Basil Pork Rice with Egg ($5).

The Phad Thai was a good rendition of the signature Thai street food classic. The plate of stir-fried rice noodles was brimming with a variety of ingredients. There was nothing extravagant but simply nice sauce-coated noodles with basic items such egg, tofu, bean sprouts and peanuts that made the dish quite delightful.

The Basil Pork Rice is another one of the pillars of Thai street food. Soi 47’s Basil Pork Rice was a simple dish that was aromatic and full of flavours. Everything combined well to create a enjoyable and satisfying dish.

We also had a Red Ruby ($3) for desserts. Soi 47’s version came with a generous amount of chewy tapioca-covered water chestnuts and strips of jackfruit. The fresh coconut milk was rich and had a floral, nutty flavour. There was lots of course ice shaving to ensure that the dessert remained really cold from the first spoonful to the last slurp. It was a perfect dessert for a hot afternoon.

Cheap & Good Thai street food

We enjoyed our simple lunch at Soi 47 Thai Food. We would go try their other dishes such as Claypot Tang Hoon with Prawns, Pandan Chicken and Stuffed Chicken Wing.

The unpretentious eatery is nothing fancy but evokes memories of street food dining in Bangkok. There is traditional Thai hospitality and prices are very reasonable. So anyone who misses the cheap and good street food found around Sukhumvit Soi 47 of Bangkok can just head to one of the outlets of Soi 47 Thai Food in Singapore.
