Moonbow Restaurant Review: Brunch at Dempsey Hill

Moonbow Restaurant is a new restaurant in Dempsey HIll that opened in January 2021. It is helmed by a famous Singapore chef known as Ironman Chef Heman Tan. The restaurant serves “modern European cuisine with an Asian influence”. We were there for weekend brunch recently.

If you find that the new Moonbow restaurant at Dempsey looks familiar, it is because it has taken over the premises formerly occupied by Greek restaurant, Blu Kouzina which is now in the unit next door. If you read our post on Blu, you will notice that the lighting, flooring and structure has remained largely the same. The furniture has been changed to good effect. The plush seats now exude an air of luxury in the restaurant.

The non-airconditioned section at the back of the restaurant has similarly been made-over. The blue and white Greek style have given way to a more contemporary style, which I suppose is in keeping with the theme of the new Moonbow restaurant.

According to Wikipedia, “a moonbow (also known as a moon rainbow or white rainbow or feelybow) is a rainbow produced by moonlight rather than direct sunlight.” Chef Heman is a multi-talented chef. You can read more about him in this 2016 New Paper article: Former drug addict is now chef, ceramicist and triathlete. We were told that some of the crockery at Moonbow were designed by him.

Moonbow Restaurant Menu

Here are pictures of the Moonbow restaurant menu. We decided to go with two items from the brunch menu: The Big English Breakfast and Fin & Leather’s Big Breakfast ($29 each). We also opted for the bread and coffee ($5 per person).

Our Brunch at Moonbow Dempsey

Our brunch was kicked off with a bowl of candy floss. The big white blob was garnished with flavoured powder and flower petals. It was a playful start to our meal.

The bread was pretty good, with a thin hard crust that was crisp and easy to handle. Inside, the bread was soft and chewy and went very well with the butter provided. Although the bread was “free flow”, we did not get a chance to go beyond a second helping. As you will soon see, the brunch dishes were huge and we struggled eat them up. The coffee was also good. The $5 top up was a good idea.

The Big Breakfast at Moonbow Dempsey was quite predictable – bacon, eggs (we selected scrabbled), sausages, salad, toast and baked beans. We liked how each element was prepared – the sauages and bacon were charred just right. It also helped that we were seated in the attractive open air part of the restaurant. It was bright, warm and balmy – i.e. a typical SIngapore day. The blinds were partially lowered allowing enough natural sunlight and breeze in.

Fin and Leather

We were attracted to the Fin & Leather Big Breakfast because of the Nürnberger sausages which I think are also known as Nuremberg sausages. We had them during a trip to Bavaria, Germany and thought that it would be nice to re-live our travels. You can read about it here.

I guess the Fin & Leather dish is the equivalent of turf and surf at Moonbow. The “Leather” being represented by the sausages and the “Fin” by the salmon, in two versions – sous vide and smoked. They forgot the sausages initially but quickly served it separately soon after (picture below). We like them. They had more flavour than regular sausages. All in, we thought that the Fin & Leather was a good hearty dish – with all the essential food groups being represented on a plate. The only thing it lacks was baked beans. We were glad that the quantity supplied with the English breakfast was enough for sharing.
