The Brewing Ground in The Yards may sound like a place for beer. It does serve beer but does not brew beer there. The new cafe does however brew some fine coffee and also offers cafe staples to go with your coffee or other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
The Brewing Ground in The Yards
The grounds of the famous Telok Kurau Primary School (which could boast of Lee Kuan Yew and Hussien Onn as its students) have been revamped into a campus-style commercial space named The Yards. The Brewing Ground is the new kid in Block 406 of The Yards.
Getting to The Yards by public transport may not be that convenient but that does not seem to be an issue, going by the long queue at The Brewing Ground we encountered on a recent weekday morning. Perhaps more people use taxis and private-hire cars nowadays. There is ample car parking lots on the grounds of The Yards for those who drive.
The outdoor space of The Brewing Ground has a laid back rustic atmosphere, the faux lawn notwithstanding.
The air-conditioned dining hall is an old training shed transformed into an attractive greenhouse-like space.
Menu of The Brewing Ground
Currently, The Brewing House only offers breakfast, brunch and a few mains and desserts. We understand that a dinner menu will be introduced later. Below are pictures of the current menu and drinks list of The Brewing Ground.
The new cafe also has a Kids Menu.
Brunch at The Brewing Ground
We visited The Brewing Ground in The Yards on a recent weekday morning. We did not make any reservation and had to join the long queue in the narrow corridor leading to the entrance of the cafe. It sort of reminded us of queuing up outside our primary school’s classroom. When we got to the front of the queue we were told that only outdoor tables were available. The tables in the al fresco area were strategically placed in shaded parts or under big umbrellas. Under the shade, we were quite comfortable and did not feel the late morning heat at all.
We ordered the Breakfast Burger ($20), Crabment Tagliatelle ($26), a hot latte ($5.50) and a Cold Brew White ($8). Service charge and GST would be added to the bill.
Our cold brew was smooth and creamy – very refreshing. The hot latte was good. It had a chocolatey flavour and left a slightly bitter aftertaste.
The Breakfast Burger was pork sausage patty, top with caramalised onions and almost completely covered by fluffy scrambled eggs, in between toasted brioche bun. Hash brown and salad were served with the burger. The burger had a nice combination of sweet and savoury flavours. The bun was nicely toasted and was crisp and the patty was juicy. It was a well put together burger that was enjoyable.
The Crabment Tagliatelle lemon butter sauce came in a hearty portion and was topped with salmon roe. There was a generous amount of sweet crabmeat. It was palatable comfort food.
Nice New Kid in the Block
The Brewing Ground in The Yards is a nice new kid in the block, or to be more precise in Block 406 of The Yards. Its location at the tranquil grounds with lots of greenery and no high rise buildings in sight makes it a rather unique and charming cafe. It has a decent offering of comfort food typically found in contemporary cafes and fine coffee. The Brewing Ground is a new cafe worth a visit.
