Bonding Kitchen at Gateway Orchard describes itself as a Modern Peranakan Restaurant. The menu offers a mix of the traditional Peranakan flavours and Chef Danny Chew’s modern interpretation of Asian dishes, such as Japanese Sashimi Scallop with Nasi Ulam & Hei Bi Hiam and Wagyu Beef Buah Keluak.

Chef Danny Chew, a graduate of At-Sunrice Global Chef Academy, had a successful private dining service in Malaysia prior to opening Bonding Kitchen Modern Peranakan Restaurant at Gateway Orchard in late 2020. The restaurant has a simple but pleasant interior decorations. It has a main dining area and a small section nearer the kitchen. The two parts are connected by a narrow corridor.

Besides the a la carte menu, Bonding Kitchen has set menus for 2 and for 4 which seem to offer good value.

Dinner at Bonding Kitchen Peranakan Restaurant


We visited Bonding Kitchen Modern Peranakan Restaurant at Orchard Gateway for dinner recently. We ordered the traditional Nyonya Chap Chye ($15) and the Wagyu Beef Rendang ($32). Rice was $1.50 per bowl and plain water was $1 per person. Service charge and GST would be added to the bill.

The portion size of the dishes was reasonable – about enough for sharing by two to three persons.

Chap Chye at  Bonding Kitchen Peranakan Restaurant

Chef Danny Chew’s Nyonya Chap Chye was a good version of the quintessential Peranakan dish. The cabbage was well braised. The various ingredients – including black fungus, bean curd skin and pork belly – and the stock combined well for a homely flavourful dish.

Wagyu Beef Rendand at  Bonding Kitchen Peranakan Restaurant

The Westholme Wagyu Beef Rendang was very good. There was the authentic rendang taste with complex flavours – rich, creamy, sufficiently lemak with the spices giving a good subtle kick. The beef was really tender. Wagyu Beef Rendang was a delicious dish. It was not inexpensive but we would order it again.

Worth Return Visits

We enjoyed our dinner. We paid over $60 for just 2 dishes plus rice and water. It was not a cheap meal. However, if the two dishes we tried were representative, Bonding Kitchen Modern Peranakan Restaurant at Gateway Orchard would be worth a few more visits. The next time we would try the set menu for 2, which is good value at $68++ relative to what we paid for our a la carte orders.
