Thanying Thai Restaurant, Amara Hotel in Tanjong Pagar is one of the best Thai restaurants in Singapore. They have replaced their traditional Thai restaurant decor with a modern elegant look. We like it!
Thanying Thai restaurant has served “exquisite Royal Thai cuisine fit for the royalties” since 1988. Consistent with their concept of a classic Thai restaurant, it had a dark, wood-panelled decor that looked sombre and serious. At the end of 2019, the restaurant underwent a period of renovation and reopened with a refreshed modern contemporary style. It has a brighter and more elegant look. We prefer this over the old look, which you can see in our previous post on Thanying.

Here are pictures of some sample pages from the Thanying Thai Restaurant. It has the same wide selection of Thai cuisine classics.
Starters
We had two starters both from the chef’s recommendations page of the menu. Tom yum goong ($10 each, picture above) and boneless stuffed chicken wings ($20 for 4 pieces, picture below). They were both very good. We like the idea of tom yum soup being served in individual portions as a small portion of this spicy Thai soup is quite enough to wake up one’s appetite. The chicken wings had their bones removed and stuffed with minced chicken with herbs. The result were wings that look very muscular and pumped up. The combination of chicken and herbs blended very well.
Main Courses
We had three main dishes with steamed rice: Thai red curry with roast duck, deep-fried boneless grouper topped with Thai spicy and sour Sauce ($42) and baked crab, clear noodles and streaky pork in claypot ($55).
The duck curry was very good. The level of spiciness was just right for us. The depth of flavours of the curry meant that this was a dish we could just eat by itself with a bowl of plain rice and be contented. In contrast the deep-fried grouper (picture below) was not as good as we had expected. It was nicely stuffed with a variety of herbs but we felt that the meat was too dry. The pleasant sauce rescued it somewhat.
We also had mixed feelngs about the claypot crab with clear noodles (picture below). The noodles were wonderful, having absorbed the flavours of the vegetables, seasoning and crab. But we found the pieces of crab to be small and dry. Perhaps we should have decided on the prawn version instead.
Overall our lunch at the new Thanying Thai restaurant at Amara Hotel was mostly positive. The decor might have changed but we were glad that the good, friendly service has remained.
