Maison Marie Bistrot & Market is the latest new cafe at Rail Mall. Its opening in March 2021 coincides with the reopening of the central stretch of the Singapore Rail Corridor. With the Bukit Timah Truss Bridge at its doorstep, this could be the best place to eat when exploring the Rail Corridor.
Rail Mall and the Singapore Rail Corridor
The Rail Mall is a convenient starting point to get access to the Singapore Rail Corridor and the old railway tracks. This part of the tracks have been refurbished and reopened. It is a short walk from Hillview MRT station and there are shops, restaurants, cafes and Cold Storage supermarket. For more information on other food choices – see our post on Rail Mall Restaurants 2021.
Maison Marie Bistrot & Market at Rail Mall
The new Maison Marie Bistrot & Market is situated at one end of Rail Mall. This is the end near the railway bridge. Right at the other end is the Cold Storage supermarket. The new cafe and fresh food market has an attractive, upmarket appearance.
The Market
The market and cafe occupy adjoining but separate units. This is a picture of the Maison Marie Fresh Market. It sells nice food and drinks like vegetables, fruits, cheese, Iberico ham, olive oil and wines. The range of food is not very wide. It is like a mini Culina store.
The Maison Marie Cafe
The cafe has a simple uncluttered look. From some angles it looks like an a rich person’s minimalist apartment. It opens at 11.30 am. By 12 noon there were several groups dining there on a weekday. It is advisable to make an reservation on weekends.
Maison Marie Bistrot Menu
Here are pictures of two pages from the Maison Marie menu. It is quite a simple menu with two lunch sets deals – two or three courses for $28 and $34 respectively.
Set Lunch Starters
For starters we chose the Ceaser salad and soup of the day – carrot soup.
We were glad that the Caeser Salad (picture above) was a chopped salad. Everything had been chopped and mixed up. We could eat it elegantly with just a spoon. The blend of flavours of cheese, lettuce, egg, proscuitto bits and sauce was harmonious. The humble carrot soup was enhanced by a mild taste of spices (I think it was cummin). Overall, we like the two starters.
Main Courses
Our choices of main course were octopus bolognese (which required a surcharge of $4) and roasted trout.
Both main courses were very good. The gemelli pasta used in the octopus dish (picture above) had a pleasant springy texture which went very well with the sauce. The pieces of octopus were expertly cooked – if only there were more of it! As for the roasted trout, we thought that the portion of fish was quite substantial. The skin was crisp and the fish had a nice oily flavour which combined well with the lemon cauliflower puree.
Our choice of dessert was opera cake. For coffee we decided on cappuccino. Both were ok but not as impressive as the food in the main part of the meal. Even though the menu looks simple and the choice of food was limited, we thought that the chef had put considerable thought into each of the dishes and had expertly blended the taste of the various ingredients to create a balanced taste. Service by the young service staff was pleasant and friendly.
