Lunch at the Braseiro restaurant in Joo Chiat reminded me of what they said about the Ford Model T: you can buy it in any color you want so long as it is black. At Braseiro restaurant, you can order anything you want as long as it is beef or roast chicken. Each main course comes with a free flow of fries and lettuce.
Braseiro specialises in steak frites. According to Dictionary.com, “frites is the French word for French fries … used on menus to indicate that the fries are prepared in the Belgian or French style. But more often the word is simply used to make them sound fancier“). At Braseiro restaurant, the main course is served with a free flow of fries and fresh lettuce. If you prefer burgers, they have a sister restaurant. Burger Frites which is just across the road.
Braseiro Restaurant Menu
Here are pictures of the some portions of the Braseiro restaurant menu. Other than the mains options of steak, beef skewers and chicken there are a few starters and desserts to choose from. Another option is to choose the Braseiro special combo for 2 pax. For $64.90 you get two main courses, a fondue de camembert, a dessert of the day to share and unlimited fries and fresh lettuce.
We dined in a group for lunch at Braseiro Restaurant Menu. We had a mix of a la carte orders, the special combo combo ($64.90), nacho cheese fries ($3 top up), raclette cheese fries ($7 top up) and some a carte orders of ribeye steak ($19.90 for 200g ; $24.90 for 300g). With so much steak on the table some red wine would make the lunch more interesting. We chose a bottle of 2018 Famille Perrin : Cotes du Rhone Réserve – a simple and easy going wine which can be drank soon after opening.
Our Lunch
It was nice to have the free flow of salad. The freshness of the lettuce helped break the oiliness of the meat dishes.
The baked camembert with French baguette was better than we thought. It was a starter well received by young and old alike.
The cheese top ups to the fries were probably unnecessary as the fries were good enough by themselves. The extra cheese toppings made them more tasty but added more calories to be lost.
The main event was of course the steak. $19.90 for a steak with fries and salad seemed like a good deal. How was such a steak? The ribeye turned out to be pretty good. Without the complex flavours of gourmet steak but a good ribeye steak nonetheless. They also prepared the steak according to the requested degree of doneness.
The dessert of the day (I cannot remember what it was) was easily converted into a birthday cake, which saved quite a bit if money as cakes are so expensive these days. Now that singing in public is frowned upon, a symbolic birthday cake is sufficient.
Braseiro restaurant turned out to be a nice place to have a simple birthday celebration. It is also a good place to being carnivourous teenagers with large appetites. The endless fries will eventually fill them up!
