There are breadlines in Joo Chiat. However, it is not the poor waiting for food but the affluent waiting for delectable quality artisan bread. Long queues can be seen outside the popular bakery Petit Pain Bakery in Joo Chiat and the new branch of Japanese bakery Kamome Bakery.
Kamome Bakery @ Joo Chiat
Kamome Bakery is a bakery cum cafe in Goldhill Plaza that is very popular, especially with the Japanese community. When the Japanese style bakery opened a shop in Joo Chiat in April 2021, it attracted long queues. The new Kamome @ Joo Chiat is for takeaway only.
One of Kamome’s most popular items is the signature Kamome Toast Bread, which takes 5 hours to bake using an original recipe with no preservatives, no honey and no egg. It also has a wide range of buns and pastries such as Melon Pan, Brownie and Red Bean Butter Bun.
Kamome Bakery has a rather uncommon feature – offering mini versions of buns for children; which are also good for those counting their calories.

Petit Pain Bakery
Petit Pain Bakery is small batch bakery which commenced operations in September 2019. It quickly gained a loyal following. Long queue would form outside its door before opening time. It closes when the products are sold out – which could be pretty early in the day.
All Petit Pain Bakery’s products are “free of improvers, preservatives and artificial flavourings; prepared from scratch and bake fresh in small batches daily”. Baguette, Honey Brioche and Croissant are a few of the popular items.
Petit Pain Bakery sets aside a small portion of their last bake for reservation on weekdays, so that those who can’t join the walk-in queue may also enjoy their bakes. Currently, Reservation opens once a week on Saturday at 4 pm sharp via Facebook / Instagram messenger.
