Canchita Peruvian Cuisine : New Restaurant at Dempsey Hill

Canchita Peruvian Cuisine is a new restaurant at Dempsey Hill that opened around April 2021. Its location at Block 9A may be obscure but it was almost full at lunch time. With the dining hall supported on stilts and jutting out into the forest, it was like dining in a treehouse in Singapore.

The New Peruvian Restaurant at Dempsey

I have never actually stepped foot into a treehouse, but have seen enough movies to imagine what it may be like. The dining room of new Canchita Peruvian Cuisine restaurant is partly supported by a metal structure at the side of the hill (see picture at the end of this post). The floor bounces when someone walks past the table. With a panoramic view of the forest outside and plants (real or fake?) dangling from the ceiling, it seemed like a refined style of treehouse.

Canchita Peruvian Cuisine Menu

Here are pictures of the Canchita Peruvian Cuisine food menu. What is Peruvian food? We were told that a key type of Peruvian food is ceviche of which a few types are featured on the menu. We were not keen on raw food at the moment and so did not get to try what white tiger’s milk taste like. A few items on the items contained an interesting mix of Chinese cuisine with Peruvian e.g. Cantonese Peruvian Fried Rice.

Our Lunch

Some bread with olive oil were served at the start of our meal at Canchita. Some Suntory draft beer seemed appropriate for lunch in a tropical treehouse.

For starters we had the Lobster Tequenos (lobster and crab fritters, $18). The spring roll-like snack contained more crab than lobster, but was still a tasty snack.

A temporary menu featured a couple of Venezuelan “Arepas” – a type of maize cakes. We tried the griddled maize cakes with melted cheese and beef stew ($18). This was an interesting dish that we have not tried before. It had a good mix of flavours. But the predominant taste was not the beef or cheese (which we were expecting), but the black beans.

Three rice dishes are featured in the Canchita menu. We picked the Arroz Con Mariscos (Crayfish & Seafood Rice, Peruvian Panca Chilli, Tomatoes, Crab Butter, White Wine ($34). It was presented very attractively. All the seafood items – fish, squid, prawns and crayfish were fresh and perfectly cooked. It was the best dish of the day. It reminded us of seafood paella, except that the rice was wet and flavoured with cheese.

Canchita Peruvian Cuisine lies at a far corner of Dempsey Hill near the Chopsuey Cafe.
