Min Jiang Chinese Restaurant at Goodwood Park Hotel underwent a major refurbishment in 2020. Which was timely since it has been around for almost 40 years. Since its re-opening at the end of last year, our plans to go had been thwarted by the various Singapore COVID restrictions. We finally visited the new Min Jiang for lunch recently.
The Goodwood Park Hotel is one of the most impressive looking hotels in Singapore. In addition to Min Jiang, has a good selection of other restaurants as well, such as the Gordon Grill and Shima restaurants.
The New Min Jiang Goodwood Park
The Chinese restaurant at Goodwood Park has a bright contemporary decor. The new restaurant is certainly nicer than what was there previously. It retains the character of a Chinese restaurant with its traditional furniture and table setting. It is the overall ambience that has changed. I think the flooring and the distinctive giant modern lanterns make such a big difference. We also like the private rooms that are spacious and tastefully specified – dignified without being ostentatious (see left picture above). Overall it is a successful makeover, but the decor is not as outstanding as what they have done at the Min Jiang Dempsey outlet.
Min Jiang Goodwood Park Menu
The Min Jiang menu is an extensive one. There are dishes there that are suitable for a grand Chinese banquet for a special occasion. For a light lunch on an ordinary day, there is the option of a light dim sum lunch which was what we had. Here are some sample pages from the menu.
Double Boiled Soups
We decided to try a couple of double boiled soups – chicken soup with prawn dumpling and a minced pork ball with crabmeat soup ($12.80). We thought that the two soups looked and tasted rather similar. It was a thick, rich soup. I am not sure what goes into the soups, but they tasted very healthy and nourishing. The main difference in the soups were the items inside – both the dumpling and meat ball were enjoyable, with the meatball being suitable for a hungry person as it was quite substantial.
Dim Sum
Most of our dim sum selection at Min Jiang Goodwood Park was quite predictable – baked pork pastry (char siew soh), siew mai and Teochew dumplings ($6.20 each serving). As noted at an earlier visit before the renovation and when push cart dim sum was still in service, they were of an expected standard but none was particularly outstanding. The best item of the three was the siew mai which contained delicious crunchy prawns.
A slightly more unusual item of our lunch was the onion pancakes ($9). The dish was a substantial one with four large pancakes that looked more like doughnuts. Sufficient amounts of spring onions were present in each of them to give a fragrant taste to each bite.
The new Min Jiang Goodwood Park Chinese restaurant is a pleasant place to have lunch. Service was polite and efficient.
