Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh Delivery – Side Dishes Stole the Show

We ordered some bak kut teh for lunch from Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh, a famous BKT restaurant in Jurong East Singapore. The pork ribs soup was not bad but what impressed us the most were the side dishes.

Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh (裕城肉骨茶) is located in a coffeeshop in Jurong East, Singapore. It is near the Yuhua Market & Hawker Centre. This seems to be a place with a growing number of good food places including a few Michelin Bib Gourmand eateries (e.g. Lai Heng Teochew Kueh and Zai Shun Curry Fish Head). Fortunately for folks like us who do not live nearby, Joo Siah BKT has an online delivery option on its website, which saved us a trip to Jurong. The BKT food delivery arrived punctually. The packaging for the food was not the most sturdy type that we have seen. The heat from the hot soup probably made it worst. But the food looked beautiful and we thought we should transfer them into proper crockery to do it justice.

At the Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh restaurant, they offer two types of pork ribs – the prime rib and the normal ribs. Only the normal ribs are available on the online delivery menu. This large bowl contains two orders ($6.90 each). The soup is the peppery Teochew type. We thought that the soup was very good. Not overly meaty or peppery, but with a nice balance of depth and flavour. The ribs were nice enough but not as ‘fall-off-the bone’ soft as we would have liked them to be.

We tried three types of side dishes and they were all very good. The braised pork belly ($6.90) is the perfect dish to eat with plain rice or porridge. The meat was very soft, saturated with the rich flavours of the gravy.

The lighter side dishes, bean curd skin ($3.80, picture above) and preserved vegetables (mei cai, $3.80) provide a contrast of taste and textures with the meat dishes. Both dishes are are nice and mild (not too salty), perfect to go with Teochew porridge in particular.

We were very pleased with our bak kut teh delivery lunch. The headline dish of pork ribs was less impressive than we had expected. But its sidekicks more than made up for it. Prices and size of portions are reasonable.
