The Whole Kitchen Bakery Cafe is a place for the wellness and whole foods set. The bakery cafe in Katong offers bread and food freshly made with natural ingredients and low sugar levels, and caters to a variety of diets – including vegan, keto, paleo and dairy free.
The Whole Kitchen
The Whole Kitchen (TWK) is started by two Singapore-based Australians – one a certified health coach and the other a classically trained chef. They wanted “to prove that healthy doesn’t have to mean tasteless, and tasty doesn’t have to mean unhealthy“. An online business was launched to offer wholesome, gluten free, low sugar baked goods made locally. The Whole Kitchen now have bakery cafes in Katong and Robinson Road.
The Whole Kitchen Bakery Cafe in Katong is located on the ground floor of Odeon Katong (the mixed development on the site of the Odeon-Katong Theatre, one of the Cathay cinemas that had become a mere memory in Singapore). Although it has a East Coast Road address, the main entrance to the bakery cafe is actually along Ean Kiam Place.
TWK Katong has recently expanded its premises. There is now a nice dining area indoors. There are also tables out in the corridors for those who prefer natural ventilation to air-conditioning.
Retail therapy
Retail therapy at The Whole Kitchen can mean buying yourself a little something good for your physical heath and boosting your mood in the process. There is a range of artisan baked goods – from gluten free breads, low sugar cakes and vegan brownies to premium Biscotti, scones and energy pearls.
Granola, nuts and cookies as well as gift sets and festive hampers are also available.
Whole Kitchen Bakery Cafe Menu
The menu is not extensive. Granola bowls and toasts are the main all day items. For lunch, there are sandwiches, quiche and soup. In addition to tea and coffee, healthy juices and smoothies are available.

Brunch at The Whole Kitchen Bakery Cafe in Katong
Our brunch at Whole Kitchen was a simple gluten free low sugar meal. We ordered the Raisin Toast ($9), Mini Smoked Salmon Quiche ($16) and a piece of Lemon Pistachio Cake ($6.60). A Long Black was $5 and Latte was $6.
There was no issue of product mis-description with the Raisin Toast. The dish was simply 3 slices of TWK raisin loaf, toasted and served with butter and chia jam. We thought $9 was quite a lot to pay for 3 slices of bread, notwithstanding that it was gluten free bread made with all natural ingredients. Did the gluten free raisin bread taste very different from the usual raisin bread? Not really. The toasts were quite enjoyable with the chia jam.
Like the raisin toasts, the mini smoked salmon quiche was nicely presented on a small wooden tray. The mini quiche was quite small. The quiche was not bad on the whole. The smoked salmon had a slightly salty and slightly smoky flavour. The savoury custard was rich and creamy and the crust had a nice flaky texture.
The favourite item of our simple brunch at TWK Katong was the Lemon Pistachio Cake. It was a cheerful cake with zest. It was delectable – dense but light, with a good balance of sweet & tart. Since it was made with all natural ingredients with low sugar level and completely refined sugar free – it was quite a guilt free treat.
The expertly brewed espresso coffee at The Whole Kitchen was good – aromatic and smooth.
Good for gluten free, low sugar foods
We thought the food at The Whole Kitchen was not out of the ordinary but nice. The point that “healthy doesn’t have to mean tasteless” was well proven. We felt the food was a bit pricey – the price for quality natural ingredients we supposed. Perhaps the higher price will deter some from eating more – and one way of eating healthy is simply eating less (that’s what a recent study reported in SCMP says – To live longer, eat less – and less often).
Those focused on wellness and whole foods and those with special diet requirements should be happy to eat at a place like TWK. If you are looking for gluten free, low sugar foods or are partial to clean eating and healthy dishes prepared with whole foods, you will not regret a visit to The Whole Kitchen .
