Red Eye Smokehouse is an American style BBQ smokehouse in Jalan Besar, Singapore. Using low and slow American smoking techniques, various cuts of beef, pork and chicken are smoked until they reach “tender perfection”. We stopped by to have a carnivorous meal on a dark rainy evening.
WAH JOO SENG INTERNATIONAL TRADING
Like some hip cafes such as Chye Seng Huat Hardware, Red Eye Smokehouse is located in a shophouse that bears the name of the business that used to occupy the space. When visiting Red Eye, it is easier to look out for the big signboard with the name of WAH JOO SENG INTERNATIONAL TRADING PTE LTD. The Smokehouse occupies the ground floor shop unit. I am not sure if any other part of the premises is being used by Wah Joo Seng. A quick Google search shows their current address at Pioneer Road in Jurong.
Red Eye Smokehouse Interior
Being a corner unit of a row of shophouses, Red Eye Smokehouse enjoys the luxury of windows on one side. This makes it brighter and less claustrophobic than the typical dark and narrow Singapore shophouse. The interior has a simple contemporary / industrial look. White walls and well-spaced tables give this place a pleasant spacious feel.
Ordering and payment is done at a long bar counter.
Red Eye Smokehouse Menu
Here are pictures of the Red Eye Smokehouse Menu and drinks list. The dinner menu has a short selection of snacks like nachos and buffalo wings. Meat, of course, form the main course options, the list of which is not very wide. With six main courses available, we ordered one of each and were able to try all the items.
USDA Beef Short Ribs
USDA beef short ribs appear to be one of the highlights at Red Eye Smokehouse. It is listed as “market price” on the menu. On the day of our visit it was stated as $12 per 100g. They were available in 3 sizes.
Our beef short rib was around 500g. This was a piece of $60+ piece of rib. The meat was about a foot long, with the meat portion around eight inches. It was certainly cooked low and slow as that showed up in the tenderness and flavours of the meat. The best way to eat it is with your hands caveman style, like Fred Flintstone gnawing on a stick of dinosaur rib. Not cheap, but we think this was one of the best items we tried that day.
Pulled Iberico Pork and Pork Belly
Here is a picture of the Red Eye pulled pork ($24), slices of pork belly ($25) with sides of Dirty Rice and mashed potatoes ($8 each). The pork items were ok but not as good as the beef. We would probably skip these in a future visit and concentrate on the beef.
Beef Brisket, US St Louis Pork Ribs and Smoked Chicken
We rank the beef brisket ($35, picture above) and pork ribs ($34, picture below) joint second in terms of our preferences that evening. Finally, we thought that the smoked chicken (picture below right) was rather dry. It was our least preferred dish of the dinner.
Overall, dinner at Red Eye Smokehouse was an interesting dinner to experience the products of US smokehouse cooking. The gigantic beef rib was the highlight both in terms of taste and visual appeal. This is an item that is worth making a trip to the Jalan Besar part of Singapore for.
