Keong Saik Bakery Holland Village (Chip Bee Gardens)

Keong Saik Bakery Holland Village is a new outlet of the cafe which seems like it has been around for a long time, but was only established in 2017. The new outlet at Chip Bee Gardens has a retro, laid-back feel.

Keong Saik cafe at Keong Saik Road is famous for their Sor Hei pastry. According to their website, “soh hei” (Cantonese for 梳起), means combing up and is symbolic of the Majie’s Sor Hei ceremony where they comb up their hair and take a vow of celibacy. The Sor Hei pastry is thus shaped like a hair bun.

Keong Saik Bakery Holland Village

The new Keong Saik Bakery Chip Bee Garden outlet is located on the quieter side of Holland Village. It is the last cafe along the row of shops along Jalan Merah Saga. It is situated in good company. There are many famous and hip cafes along this stretch, such as Sunday Folks, Arabica % and Baker & Cook. The good news is that, based on a quick glance of menus, Keong Saik Bakery seems to be the most affordable of the cafes here.

The new cafe is small but stylish. A display counter and service area takes pride of place. The old school mosaic tiles look wonderfully 70s. It is a cosy cafe so do not be surprised by a bustling atmosphere. The folks in the Holland V area know a good deal when they see one.

Cakes and Pastries

The glass case shows off the creations of the bakers at Keong Saik Bakery. What stands out at this cafe is the local flavours that are woven into classic pastries. Garlic Otak Baguette, Milo Bostock and Attap Chee Rose Cheesecake are some examples.

Keong Saik Bakery Holland Village Menu

Here is a picture of the KSB menu. What is notable are the discounts that come with bundling your orders eg a $1discount with a drink and cake combo. Add on an order of 2 eggs for an additional cost of $1.20 (regular price $2.20). With coffee prices starting from $2.50, this seems like an affordable place in Holland Village to enjoy a kopitiam style breakfast in a hip cafe.

What We Ate at KSB Holland V

We had a coffee and cake break at Keong Saik Bakery Holland Village. We selected an otak-otak Danish ($4.40), chocolate indulgence cake, cappuccino ($4.50) and black coffee ($2.50). Discounts were given for the two combos. The chocolate cake was the predictable choice – you can’t go wrong with chocolate. It was fine but not exceptional.

The otah Danish was the more adventurous choice. It had a sprinkling of otah crumbs on the surface. They were nice but we thought they should have put in more of it. The otah presence was rather weak. Overall it was a simple coffee and dessert stopover at Chip Bee Gardens.
